So I let 100's of crawfish loose in Lake Ed last year. I have tried, twice now, to capture one just to see how they are getting on. I bought one of these.

a while back and was surprised to see the thing cleaned out of bait without any critters trapped inside. I think I reported on this.
Tried again yesterday, using old hot dogs. Damn thing empty the next morning. What is eating the bait and leaving no trace?
Thing is that it settles in the mud so the bait is not accessible EXCEPT by a critter entering the trap. I did not think that minnows could completely consume 3 hot dogs or a chicken breast overnight.
The hole on the end is about 2 inches in diameter. All I can think of is a school of piranha like minnows.

If the critters can get back out then they're a helluva lot smarter and agile than crawdads!

In all seriousness, a neighbour of mine is a crayfish farmer who, unlike you, knows what he is doing.
I can put you in touch if you so desire.

Farmer? As in work? No.
I tell the peasants that there are gold coins on the bottom and they can have as many as they can retrieve using only their mouths.

Most amusing.
Seriously, this is just a matter of curiosity.

Really? Tasty?
Because it is my contention that the FIRST person brave enough to eat a crawdad was pretty damn hungry.
"Oooh, look - a big bug. YUM!"
