WSJ EXCLUSIVE: An investigation into Hans Niemann, the chess grandmaster accused of cheating by Magnus Carlsen, found a widespread pattern of cheating beyond what he publicly admitted—likely in more than 100 online games.

Yeah, it has been exploding, but, thus far, no evidences – thanks – that he cheated in recent live play.

The only way to cheat now is to use an engine. If you can somehow communicate with an engine while playing, nobody can beat you. Obviously playing online makes this easy as pie.

It was noticed that when Hans Niemann played a match that was not broadcast live, he no longer appeared to be a genius at chess. However, he is somewhat of a genius at communicating with a engine using technology that is not visible, understandable, or easily available.

While chess engines, especially the AI versions, have become unbeatable by humans, watching them fight it out with each other is one of the most amazing battles. Of course most times you have to speed it up to watch over 200 moves before it is a draw, but still, makes you realize that soon nothing will stand up to the engines.

Having a secret way to communicate with an AI makes you invincible against other humans now. Unless of course, they are doing the same thing.

I read through it about a week ago. ONLINE it can be demonstrated by his vast improvement with play that he is probably using a chess game to come up with moves. People can then test that, blah, blah, this is boring, chess is boring, let's set the nerd on fire.

I did not post much since how he could cheat LIVE is not explained. There are cases of players cheating together for position and even some guy who kept going to the bathroom so he could run moves on his phone! This gets like sign stealing in a Real Game where you even have spectators moving around in the audience to suggest moves!

No matter how much he cheats, he will never cheat as much as any of your moms.

The only ones where the evidence seems to be conclusive is in online chess. Chess.com says they detected it in over 100 games, including money tournaments. It would be fairly easy to do in the comfort of your own home. They say Hans admitted this in emails. It was more than he publicly admitted to.

The question of whether he cheated over the board, and by what mechanism he could have accomplished that without detection is still unresolved. The report suggests that Hans has had a more rapid rise in rating from age 11 to 19 than any other player, including the likes of Bobby Fischer and Magnus Carlsen himself. They stopped short of claiming to have any proof of cheating over the board.

One idea that has received a lot of public attention is the vibrating anal beads theory. This is a sex toy that can be controlled remotely. All you would need is an accomplice to analyze the current position with an engine and send a coded message via a series of vibrations. A similar idea that occurred to me would be something in the mouth, like a false tooth. Similar idea.

I don't think there is yet conclusive proof of cheating over the board, but there are these circumstantial things, like his association with Maxim Dlugy who has his own history of cheating, and the rapid rise in Elo rating at what seems to be a "late age" for a chess player. He's still only 19 years old, but I guess that's considered old in chess years to make such rapid progress.

This Guardian article is not paywalled and also has embedded the full 72-page report.

Here is the report itself.

When the match is not broadcast or streamed live, not that great of a player

One can imagine it would be easy to do a Mythbuster episode on this one

"to recover from the devastating damages that defendants have inflicted upon his reputation."

Not as much as the devastation caused if he gets the wattage wrong on his ass-beads.

Though what is funny is the Streisand Effect: people are asking why "Magnus" would know you could do that with anal beads.

P.S. Insert YOUR MOM here.

The anal bead theory wasn't originally mooted by Magnus himself, or by Nakamura, fwiw.

It will be interesting to see how this ultimately plays out in court.

My understanding is that it was originally suggested by someone in the chat on the Chessbrah Twitch channel. Basically a random denizen of the internet.

A review of the people doing mental analysis along with a comparison of other young players getting to 2600 or so FIDE rating makes it look pretty suspicious. That he and his chess coach were both banned for a time form online play for cheating doesn't help his credibility, either. His interview after the big win was likewise bad.

But I seriously doubt it could ever be shown. However, given the difficulty in proving a defamation claim against even a limited-purpose public figure, the lawsuit is borderline frivolous unless he has something I haven't seen (and to be fair, I only skimmed the pleading back when it was filed, so I spent no real time on it). Also, at his level, he'd only need to get any type of help for a few - perhaps even just 1 - important move(s). Difficult to detect under the best of situations.
