Old junk

Post by Pyrrho »

Just hauled a few boxes of old hard drives (3 40-meg hard drives!) and a Goldstar laptop I've had since the late 1980s, to the recycle center.

Gonna need a moment, boys.

I was handed a CD at work last Friday. It was surreal. Thought maybe I was dreaming.

I asked around and learned that our lab equipment repair vendors had been delivering their repair reports as pdfs burned onto CDs all this time. No fucking way.

There were only 3 remaining PCs in the lab (possibly on planet earth) that had functioning CD drives, and two were being used by humans from this millennium. I walked up to the open PC, cleared off all the overgrown vines and layers of cobwebs, and popped in the CD.

Turns out the drive had not even been formatted. It asked if I wanted to format the drive to burn music DVDs or format it as a flash drive. Shit, the software for formatting CD drives for retieving data other than MP3s was not even installed. I tried formatting as a USB and was able to see the pdf, but could not open it or copy it onto the network.

The vendor was still in the lab and let me borrow her portable CD drive so I could transfer the pdf onto the network for sign-off. She said her company had not modernized because file transfer software and thumb drives were so riddled with viruses and Spyware that her company didn’t want to risk a security breach. 😳

I placed the disc on a shelf of other similar discs that was 6 feet long, then went back to my desk to ponder when the inevitable end of life as I know it will come. It was 3pm, and I was the only individual in an open office area that was designed to occupy around 100 workers. All the rest were either working from home, or had taken off. I had to wave my arms once in a while to make the lights come back on.

This company was supposed to be the place to save me from the collapse of my previous company. I have nowhere left to run. I now understand they hired me because I'm now one of those old guys that knows how to keep the old equipment running, you know that old equipment that the company relies on to generate revenue. The young kids can't figure it out because there's no app on their phones for it.

This is how the human race ends, folks.

How many companies are there that are relying on one linchpin old guy to keep the wheels turning and have no idea its over once he retires or dies? How many billionaires don't even know that guy exists or how there's no contingency plan, or apprentice, or robot ready to take over this time?

I spent the weekend returning two of my PCs to working order after Windows 10 automatic updates royally fucked both of them up.

When I built them they were pretty much state of the art and are still respectably powerful for home PCs, so I'm loth to junk them until the hardware packs up. The registry tweak in this article claims to prevent updates downloading and installing automatically if anyone is similarly afflicted.

Thanks for the link.

Now I just need to get head corporate IT to implement. Mission Impossible.

On 3 occasions over the past month, a Microsoft "upgrade" changed all of my defaults to use Microsoft products.....against my will....WHILE I WAS WORKING!!!!

When I complained to IT, they said it was their policy to allow Microsoft to apply all updates and upgrade immediately to avoid malware and security breaches.

:x

When it's Microsoft doing it, its called an "upgrade" or "security patch". When its anyone else, its called a virus or Malware attack.

It would be funny if it were happening to someone else. Someone who isn't the old guy who's expected to fix this shit, without a budget, without an Admin account, and without any sort if executive authority.

On the plus side, no one has the nerve to criticise me anymore, and I take full advantage. I wear comfortable cloths when others are in their Sunday best. I'm completely fearless when it comes to asking tough questions and pointing out obvious obsurdities, and I have no problem with stepping in to get the job done when the so called leadership team runs away and hides.

When I was younger, this would get me into trouble, but this type of behavior is accepted from old people. So yeah, oldness has its perks.

What was I saying again? Oh yeah, damn kids won't keep off my lawn. Need to install an electric fence.

Look on the bright side, none of my machines will run Windows 11, so that's a whole load of fuck-ups I won't have to solve. :)

This is precisely why I always wanted a cane. I think I now have enough gray hair to get one.

I can't wait to shake it at young people. And I picked up a book on using one for self defense.

Only in this case it will be offense.

Andrew Jackson?

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/ ... 180962526/
Lawrence pulled a Derringer pistol from his jacket, aimed at Jackson, and fired. Although the cap fired, the bullet failed to be discharged.

As Lawrence withdrew a second pistol, Jackson charged his would-be assassin. “Let me alone! Let me alone!” he shouted. “I know where this came from.” He then attempted to batter the attacker with his cane. Lawrence fired his second gun—but this one, too, misfired.

Within moments, Navy Lieutenant Thomas Gedney and Tennessee congressman Davy Crockett had subdued Lawrence and hurried the president off to a carriage so he could be transported to the White House. When Lawrence’s two pistols were later examined, both were found to be properly loaded and well functioning. They “fired afterwards without fail, carrying their bullets true and driving them through inch boards at thirty feet,” said U.S. Senator Thomas Hart Benton. An arms expert later calculated that the likelihood of both pistols misfiring was 125,000 to 1.
Bullets were afraid of Andrew Jackson and his cane.

Well, I looked at this and thought "WANT!"

Decent Price, reputable company, and I could add one of these blisteringly fast gizmos...

https://i.imgur.com/6SAH9kU.png

...and rip a still capable graphics card from one of my old machines. (I'm only a casual gamer.)

Yeah, I'd have bragging rights for around £600. Not bad.

But then, thinks I, "You have 3 pretty decent PCs already." One's on my desktop, one's plugged into the bedroom TV for entertainment purposes, (like watching HD porn on a 50" smart TV plugged into a respectable HiFi system, which also has a top Roku streaming device plugged in, (they're ace, seeing as I can't get a reliable digital TV signal through my roof antenna: every time it rains,(nearly always in Manchester,) the signal craps out, and one's a spare in case the others fail.

Hmm. Why not upgrade all my three existing boxes? Max them out, fill every slot with the best bargain stuff I can find. So, I went on a spending spree.

By my maths, that comes to £254.93 for three very fast, if a little aged boxes.

Do I win a brass figamagee?

My son did that. Bought components and built the fastest computer in our house for less than $400. It has pretty flashy lights like a carnival. Uses it to play video games and edit video recordings. Fancy stuff.

I spent $67 at a bar watching a hockey game and had a young woman I chatted with ask me to take her to dinner next week.

Advantage: me.

Although it may well end up costing more than your upgrades by the end of it. Let's call it a draw?
