I am curious about firearm prices over time. Auction houses have prices realized as you can see from the link. In this cae the problem is that the price is an image. OK you might say, that is why god invented OCR. For reasons that I cannot fathom I cannot get the image to be read.
I can copy/paste the pages ... viz.

But I am left with the task of reading prices in. It is more than 1500 numbers and I am lazy.
n.b. I am taking an iconic weapon (a luger) grabbing the prices by auction, taking the median price realized then dicking around with a bunch of covariates to see what sort of relationship I can come up with.
It will also be interesting to see how $1000 invested in a variety of places would perform over 10 years or more.
Yes, I have time on my hands, why do you ask?

Poulon auctions has reports that are readable.
This is a pain in the ass. I am rethinking.

You may find this article, (and others), from Investopedia helpful. I primarily use Trustnet and Morningstar to evaluate investments but Trustnet doesn't appear to have a USA equivalent.

Fuck's sake ed.
I am not interested in the data. I am interested in the format you cut it from and the format you pasted it to. Then I might have a solution for you.

Re: How can I get this in readable format
Lets put it another way, are you reading the data from the webpage itself or from one of the downloadable formats from the link.
Because, an iota (17 seconds) of research will tell you that some/many/all OCR software packages cannot read some/many/all web based PNG files. Why? For example, the text on web based PNGs is possibly not in the right location or sometimes has images hidden behind the file that make it impossible for a particular OCR software to read.
A possible solution would be to download the .pdf from the link and OCR the fuck out of that. Failing that, convert the .pdf to a format that your OCR works on.
Or, download ten different OCR packages and see which one works.
Or, stop being a lazy fuck and type it in. Which you could have done in the time it took you to respond to my first post.
The choice....is yours.

Re: How can I get this in readable format
At work I use the paid version of Acrobat to OCR images. Sometimes I have to correct some things but it is easier than typing in rows and columns of numbers.

Re: How can I get this in readable format
ed, is that an image of a spreadsheet? If the text is editable text, there are spreadsheet formula methods that can be used to extract the prices from the text strings.
Or you hire a cafone to retype it for you.

Re: How can I get this in readable format
Need to get it typed in. I can copy/paste from the screen (at the link) but the price is an image.
Not worth dicking around with it.
Thank you though.
