More evidence links vaccine refusal to measles outbreaks

A recent review has found that in measles outbreaks during the past five years, at least 70% of the infected individuals had not been vaccinated. Seven articles published from November 30, 2015, through June 1, 2020, covered 8 measles outbreaks that included 1,176 individuals with measles, of whom 125 (10.6%) had received measles-containing vaccine, 888 (75.5%) had no history of vaccination, and 163 (13.9%) had unknown vaccination status.[Phadke VK and others. JAMA, Aug 14, 2020] State and national measles surveillance data from 2016 to June 2020 indicates that of 1392 measles cases, 152 (10.9%) had received measles-containing vaccine, 989 (71.0%) had no history of measles vaccination, and 251 (18.0%) had unknown vaccination status.

New York declares state of emergency over polio

Health officials say wastewater samples in New York City and four adjacent counties have tested positive for a poliovirus that can cause paralysis.

Although only one case has so far been confirmed, it was the first in the country in nearly a decade.

Polio was largely eradicated from the US by vaccinations that began in 1955.

By 1979, the US was declared polio-free.

But according to New York officials, vaccination rates are too low in parts of New York. Friday's emergency declaration is aimed at boosting flagging immunisation rates.

New York's state health department said it aims to boost vaccination rates from the current state-wide average of about 79% to above 90%.

She [Health Commissioner Dr Mary Bassett – Ed.] added that "for every one case of paralytic polio observed, there may be hundreds of other people infected".

Officials began monitoring wastewater in the state for poliovirus after an unvaccinated man in Rockland County, just north of New York City, contracted the virus in July - the first recorded case since 2013 - and suffered paralysis.

The case was later genetically linked to paralytic polio found in a wastewater sample collected from nearby Nassau County in August.

Wastewater samples in Orange County, Sullivan County and the five boroughs of New York City have also tested positive for paralytic polio.

An outbreak of measles in the US state of Ohio has infected 82 children so far - the biggest eruption of the disease in the county since 2019.

The first cases were reported on 9 November near the city of Columbus at a nursery. By the end of the month, cases were seen at a market, mall and church.

Nearly all of the cases have been in young children who are not fully vaccinated against the disease.

Child vaccinations against measles fell amid the Covid pandemic, experts says.

Measles is highly contagious - more so than Covid - and can cause serious illness.

The figures reported over the past two months in Ohio are more than for the whole of the US in the previous two years. In 2022, 117 measles cases were reported, compared to 49 cases the previous year and 13 cases in 2020, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

So far, 32 of the infected children in Ohio have been admitted to hospital.

In a private group on Telegram, parents whose children are living with a range of disabilities including autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, and Down Syndrome cheer each other on and provide support when discussing daily struggles.

But the channel’s main function isn’t actually support: It’s to promote the use of veterinary ivermectin as a treatment—and in some cases a cure—for these disabilities.

In the days since Rhode Island-based ivermectin influencer Danny Lemoi died, his 140,000 Telegram followers have continued to promote his dangerous medical advice—including the use of apricot pits to treat cancer, despite official warnings that this “natural remedy” can be fatally poisonous.

Danny Lemoi took a daily dose of veterinary-grade ivermectin and told his thousands of followers to give the drug to children. He died of a common side effect of the medication.

In the Telegram channel, administrators broke the news of his death to his followers. “Though it was obvious that Danny had the biggest heart, it was unbeknownst to him that his heart was quite literally overworking and overgrowing beyond its capacity, nearly doubled in size from what it should have been,” the admins wrote, adding: “We understand that this is going to raise questions for those who were following him.”

The admins added that Lemoi had undergone testing on his heart last year, but the results had shown no cause for concern.

Lemoi began taking the version of ivermectin designed for animals on a daily basis in 2012, after he was diagnosed with Lyme disease, according to a detailed account of his medical history he gave on a podcast last November. He said then that five months after first taking the drug, he quit all other treatments and believed ivermectin had “regenerated” his heart muscle.
