Ars Technica wrote:Dutch privacy regulator says Windows 10 breaks the law

The lack of clear information about what Microsoft does with the data that Windows 10 collects prevents consumers from giving their informed consent, says the Dutch Data Protection Authority (DPA). As such, the regulator says that the operating system is breaking the law.

To comply with the law, the DPA says that Microsoft needs to get valid user consent: this means the company must be clearer about what data is collected and how that data is processed. The regulator also complains that the Windows 10 Creators Update doesn't always respect previously chosen settings about data collection. In the Creators Update, Microsoft introduced new, clearer wording about the data collection—though this language still wasn't explicit about what was collected and why—and it forced everyone to re-assert their privacy choices through a new settings page. In some situations, though, that page defaulted to the standard Windows options rather than defaulting to the settings previously chosen.

In the Creators Update, Microsoft also explicitly enumerated all the data collected in Windows 10's "Basic" telemetry setting. However, the company has not done so for the "Full" option, and the Full option remains the default.

Has somebody tested that?
I tested 25 games against the Windows Compact function: 51GB more free space, and all the games run with no performance issues.

Compact.exe is effectively a Win command.

Be very very wary of the latest W10 update: it completely fucked up my laptop (running a second system restore right now, the first failed).

Having lost my desktop icons, then even text in alert boxes & menus, a reset revived my laptop.

After that, did a desktop update with some trepidation, but everything went OK. Phew!

On a whim plugged in my 14 years old photo printer (Canon says: no driver past XP/32) and, lo & behold, W10 downloaded the driver, installed it, and it works as it should!

Someone please tell me that MS is about to come out with something that works like 7? I'm about to need a new confuser, and I refuse, flatly, to buy into fucking 10. (Or, please tell me that there is a fix for all the bloatware and 8-ish fucking desktop)

I mean, Jeebus! I've heard that certain hardware configs will not run 7, even if you can find/have a legit copy for a fresh install.

Goddamnit!

'18 could be the year I go Mac. I'd hoped to be dead (of natural causes) before uttering those words. (Sorry Doc) :P I'm just not in the mood to learn a totally new OS and all the apps to make it useful. Sure, Betamax is better than VHS, but, you know, fuck!

Oh, and fuck.

Yea. Windows 10 works pretty much like Windows 7.

Is one valid solution. Another far cheaper solution is one of the many flavors of Linux. Or a chromebook. If you're not a gamer, any of those will do.

The "Metro" desktop is optional in Win 10.

Works okay for me.

Don't opt in to having a Microsoft account and you won't be tracked as much.

Be sure to get the Professional version for more control over your own destiny.

Or run Win 98SE like Abdul does.

I have Windows 10 on my backup machine and it won't shut down properly. Unless I hold down the manual power button it automatically restarts every time. I've tried every fix suggested on the web up to and including a clean reinstallation but nothing works. It's driving me nuts!

Don't know what you have, apart from that update glitch everything works as it should. Just added a second monitor to my desktop and all I had to do was switching primary and secondary.

Bis repetita non placent! :x

Serious update some days ago. Desktop, no problem; laptop, ouch! (Double-clicking an image put it as wallpaper instead of opening the viewer. BTW, noticed that choosing a software as default program has become quite difficult: it's either Win inbuilt or Win store. Thanks Microsoft nanny!)

Restore + DISM + SFC cured the problem. I think that from now on I'll run both tools before any big update!

Tracking, games and general bloatware.

Filetype by filetype, yes. But I was referring to the choice of a default program for, e. g., all images:

But writing this I'm not so sure anymore there ever was a fileselector to pick any prog. Perhaps that's an XP feature? :?

If you right click on a file (use to be Shift + Right Click) there's an option to "Open With" where you can chose a default program to open that file with or open it with an other program just that time.

If a file has not default program associated with it then by default you will get "Open With" option by trying to run/open the file in Windows.

I know what you're referring to. It wasn't an OS feature, which is to say the OS didn't intentionally thwart this feature.

So if I installed Gimp, for example, the gimp installer would automatically set all image type files to default to gimp. When Win10 came along, it no longer allowed for programmatically selecting default for any file type by any installer; the user has to do it manually, one at a time.

I get the security feetshure, but an alert would be enough. Another Microsoft infantilization, which just happens to direct you to their store.

Windows 10 April update took 1.5 hours. I don't think it took that long to install.

There doesn't appear to be anything I give a shit about in this update. It put a M$ Edge icon on my desktop, which I promptly deleted. It also added a bunch of shit to my start menu, also deleted. Now I have to recheck all my privacy settings to make sure Bill isn't trying to get in my bathroom.
