Tropic Thunder
See it.
It's all shades of wrong.
A movie that manages to make Tom Cruise look like he has a sense of humor and may even be cool. That's right, you heard me.

Aw damn. I was thinking of seeing that, too. But with a statement like that, I almost want to forget I ever thought of such a thing.Grammatron wrote:A movie that manages to make Tom Cruise look like he has a sense of humor and may even be cool. That's right, you heard me.

I suffered my mental breakdown immediately after seeing this movie.
No lie. In the parking lot just about three minutes after we left the theater.
I don't know if that means the movie was that good or that bad.
But I like it. The movie. And I have always hated all the actors that are in it, except for Downey. I've always liked him.
Jack Black impressed the shit out of me with his jonesing character. Damn near Oscar worthy performance. Seriously.
But this movie just may put you into the looney bin. Fair warning!

I'm 9 years late to this party. :o :o :o
Saw it on Netflix. Always wanted to see it, but never got around to it. Always wondered how RDJ did a movie in blackface and didn't get lynched. Now I get it. He was amazingly good.
I didn't recognize Tom Cruise. I knew the guy was in heavy make-up and was trying to figure out who he was. Finally guess it at the very end of the movie.
You, should definitely see it, DrMatt, if they have Netflix in the afterlife. :notsure:

Yeah, it was definitely a new sort of role for Tom Cruise, different from the sort he usually plays.

Re: Tropic Thunder
What other movies have people finally got around to seeing, many years late?
Me, this was like last year, but I finally got around to seeing Fight Club. Still have yet to see The Big Lebowski. Also, I never saw Twin Peaks. And there's probably a lot of other ones too, which either I never saw or saw more recently after getting Netflix.

Saw both Fight Club and The Big Lebowski for the first time a year ago. Liked them both. I actually read the Fight Club book before I saw the movie. Not surprisingly, the book was better.Anaxagoras wrote:What other movies have people finally got around to seeing, many years late?

Never saw Cool Hand Luke, and have been meaning to since CHL's passing. Would be nice if it showed up on Netflix, because I rarely get internet time on my desktop anymore.

I recently saw Citizen Kane. I think it was on Amazon Prime.
I'm sure I'm probably the only one who hadn't already seen it. But just in case anyone hasn't, yeah if you get a chance you should watch it. I won't spoil the ending, but I liked it.

Thanks. I haven't seen it yet. Also haven't seen Dr. Strangelive, A Clockwork Orange, and a number of other classics that everyone else my age seems to have seen.Anaxagoras wrote: βSun Jan 31, 2021 7:16 am I recently saw Citizen Kane. I think it was on Amazon Prime.

You gotta see both of those someday. (A Clockwork Orange is not kid-friendly though)Bruce wrote: βMon Feb 01, 2021 3:02 amThanks. I haven't seen it yet. If you have Amazon Prime you can probably stream them, I'm guessing.

Re: Tropic Thunder
A lot of them don't age well.
Clockwork Orange was one of those Kubrick things that went on too long and was self conscious. You know, a movie that says "look at me, Stanley made me". In fact, most of his stuff was self referential crap. 2001 should be a Class III narcotic.
Citizen Kane is a piece of overacted drivel. It's like going into a gallery and seeing people ooh and aaaah at a toilet seat hung on a wall.
Strangelove ditto. Funny scenes here and there but a movie cannot be carried by an image of a faded cowboy star sitting on a garbage can and making believe it's an A-Bomb.
We rewatched Little Drummer Girl (the original, not the recent remake which was pretty good). Here is a news flash ... Dianne Keaton cannot act. It was really and truly horrid. Sat my son down and said "son, behold a classic". 10 minutes in I got a plaintive look and a moaned "daaaad???". I apologized and sent him on his way. I hadda watch till the end. "Train wreck" insults train wrecks.
Jaws and Alien had the desired effect on the kids. Still well made pieces of film. Lawrence of Arabia is long and pretentious (an "Overture"????).
Some of these things remind me of films from the 30's and 40's where stage actors "projected", took a long time for that level of overacting to fade.
One film that aged well (with one exception ..) is The Haunting.
Thing is you can't begin watching and then feel guilty when you realize that tastes have changed. BTW, you should thank Robert Evans shade when you see a good drama. He sorta made it happen.

I watched Casablanca for the second time recently. I don't know if it deserves all the hype, but it was pretty damn good.

Re: Tropic Thunder
Seems to be true of a lot of movies.
I'm not entirely sure how much is because of the movie itself and how much is because I have aged to the point where things that used to amuse me have lost their appeal for me. :notsure:

Re: Tropic Thunder
Agree though it has been a while sine I have seen it. As a general rule most of those movies with a "tough guy" in the main role are embarrassingly overrated.
I recall some years ago my Dad saying "they don't make then like they did". So some movie from the 40's came on he he said "come on, watch a real movie". And I did. To his everlasting credit, 15 minutes in, he turned to me and said "this stinks". Last we ever heard of those crappy things.
I am trying to think of earlier flicks that aged well ...
I liked Jimmy Cagney and movies with him are not movies so much as a Jimmy Cagney stand up act. Though I did watch White Heat with the kid a while back and it was still very good, and current.

Re: Tropic Thunder
I agree with ed.
The majority of movies don't age well, even the ones from 20/30/40 years ago. What puts me off about movies from that range is the shit background music. Lots of toots and trills from trumpets, clarinets, and flutes that are supposed to add.......something......but it's just distracting.
And the tired movie tropes. Enough. It's not cute anymore.

Tried to watch the Thomas Crowne Affair w/ Steve McQueen. Couldn't get into it. Scene changes had these animated square things. Sooooo dated.

I saw Citizen Kane a few years back. It was a great film, but what really stood out for me was how many directors have copied this film and scenes from it, as an homage or otherwise, but in a fun way. It's cool to see genesis for certain things.Anaxagoras wrote: βSun Jan 31, 2021 7:16 am I recently saw Citizen Kane. I think it was on Amazon Prime.

Re: Tropic Thunder
Funny.
I watched an interview with Al Pacino where he states he based his "Tony Montana" completely on the performance of Paul Muni in the Japanese original Scarface. That performance is so scene-chewing, over-the-top, For the Love of Mike, Al seems rather understated. This includes his infamous "Say Hello to My Little Friend" scene based on Muni randomly firing out of a window while screaming, For the Love of Mike.
Some do "age well." As the director of The Thing prequel explained as to why he refused to remake the Carpenter . . . "thing,": "You don't remake Jaws!"
I never found Casablanca at all entertaining save for Claude Raines. He is fantastic in another "Aged Well" film: Lawrence of Arabia. Casablanca was always a "Chick Flick" that decades of dudes could take dudettes to to show that they "understood" or something like that.
A Clockwork Orange and Dr. Strangelove age well since the themes remain relevant as well as the performances. The former is a difficult film based on a difficult book, but that is sort of what happens when the narrator and principle character is a complete cunt, and is suppose to be a complete cunt.
Citizen Kane? Only saw it once. I avoided it because, as a Wee Spud, I read that Peanuts cartoon and had a teacher confirm t3h spoilage. Still, despite that, it is a great film. The film about its creation β RKO 281 β is worth seeing.
In the rain.

Here is the opening of he original Thomas Crowne Affair. It is like an exemplar of overstated movie making
One second of this thing, selected from anywhere would date it immediately.
I get the attraction of Clockwork Orange and other selection from the Kubrick "ouvre". What one needs with Kubrick is an editing room. The pretention is that every second is necessary. It isn't and is there for Stanly, not the audience. On a side note, check out this

About a guy who impersonated Kubrick, for years evidentially. Seems his approach was to sit people down and bore them to death. Just kidding.
Speaking of overlooked flicks and John Malkovich, check out Ripley's Game based on the books about Tom Ripley by Pat Highsmith.
