Immigants don't pay taxes for seven years

Post by Denise »

Immigrants and Refugees don't have to pay federal income tax. It must be true because I hear it all the time. No amount of proof will desuade the anti immigration zealot from spouting this gem off when the topic of immigration comes up.

I believe immigration in moderation. :D Too many at one time can cause problems with services and not to mention the rental market. I'm against illegal immigration and I think more money should be spent for enforcement of our laws. The zealots I'm talking about want all immigration stopped.

As for not paying taxes. A lot of Americans get paid under the table wink wink as well. Of course, it's not a problem for some of the people I'm talking about as many of them see no problem if they do it. Of course, there's no way of getting around sale taxes or gas taxes etc..

Want to add that I'm a Minnesotan. There aren't that many hispanic immigrants as compared to other regions.

So where are your recent immigrants from? Or is it just abstract "zealotry"?

Or anti-Canadianism? :P

Us? Move down there? Pfft..yeah right

(actually my uncle works in houston and makes a crapload of money compared to here, but everything down there is more expensive so it all evens out)

<b>'Nuff said!</b>
Understand the difference between someone moving down there and us Canadians giving Shatner a boot to the ass out of our country ;)

Thailand. We get Hmong refugees. These guys helped us fight the Viet Cong and got left high and dry. They fled to Thailand among other places. And now they come to Minnesota.

Here in The OC, we have lots and lots of Vietnamese immigrants (I remember my parents complaining bitterly about it during the mid-70's) and of course, being so close to Mexico, lots of Mexican immigrants, too. I think it's made Orange County a far more interesting place than the white-bread haven of my youth.

Minnesota also gets a lot of Somali refugees. They have a little more trouble than the Hmong.

Too many damn Persians!! In fact I am staying with some of the bloody wogs and . . . hey . . . wait . . . NOT THE FACE!!!!

Seriously, the sun joked he had a t-shirt that says "I Am NOT an Arab!" Touchy subject, it seems.

Illegal immigration is a major drain on health care and things like that. Legal immigration is not. Unfortunately, for DECADES, xenophobics have fought legal immigration of "those people" they did not like. It is a bizarre thing for Americans--history of Irish not liking . . . Poles not liking . . . blacks not liking . . . everyone not liking and eventually having to agree to dislike someone else!! Jews!! [Stop that!--Ed.]

It is also a sad fact that it is easier to deal with "life's problems" if you can blame "someone." It gives you something to hate and makes you special--"they" care enough to hurt you.

Years ago, a Chicago newspaper published a survey of Idaho or Iowa farmers . . . is there a difference? Basically Idiots Out Wandering Alone . . . asked if they believes a "Jewish Conspiracy" was trying to hurt their farming. Something like 40% believed it possible.

So "those people" who do not speak Spanish and "eat wierd food" and listen to Country-Western Music must be behind "everything." This clouds real problems.

As for Canadians we keep forgetting they are not part of one of those states we fly over to get to someplace interesting like Boston, New York, SF, or Nome.

This is the thread where I put Abdul Alhazred accidentally on ignore. It's right next to quote you see... And I can't get him off of ignore- see my posts in forum help. He is, ironically, one of my favorite posters and now I can't see anything he writes unless someone quotes him. So, sorry Abdul if I don't respond to anything - I can't see it. I hope this problem is fixed soon!

If they have a green card, then they pay income taxes like anyone else
Not just a green card. It applies if you have a work visa (such as an H1B). And I looked into this subject very carefully before I moved to the US.

Strictly speaking, any income from working in the US is subject to tax irrespective of your immigration status. If someone doesn't declare US income then they may get away with it, but the are still liable for it.

I think it's worth pointing out that here in the UK legal immigrants pay more in taxes than they take in benefits. As a group they are a net benefit to the country.

The conservatives recently proposed a policy of encouraging people to have more children in order to try and mitigate the demographic time bomb (not enough people working to support those in retirement - and on benefits). Of course encouraging a population explosion is really gonna solve that one guys

However that same party wants to drastically reduce immigration.

I'm not saying the latter policy is any more sustainable than the first but it would certainly solve the pensions problem more easily than just encouraging people to have babies

i promote the migration of people into the united states and i think its hillarious that so many people have problems with illegal immigration.

if i was an uneducated foreigner im damn sure that id do whatever it takes to get into a country like the USA or canada, maybe we should worry less about blocking illegal immigration and actually fix the financial inequality among countries.

People forget that random luck is the only reason that we are in this country in the first place, and that u could have been born in a much worse situation.

I understand that it harms the economy and welfare system substantialy, for some reason this doesnt sound so bad to me.

What you said is absolutely true and many, many people understand it. However, I could easily gather a group of people who would have such a hard time grasping the concept that I would pay money to watch you try to explain it to them.
