Bus carrying Germans crashes, kills 29 on Portugal's Madeira
LISBON, Portugal (AP) — A tour bus carrying German tourists crashed on Portugal's Madeira Island on Wednesday, killing 29 people and injuring 28 others, local authorities said.

The bus, which was carrying 55 people, rolled down a steep hillside after veering off the road on a bend east of the capital, Funchal, and struck at least one house, local mayor Filipe Sousa told cable news channel SIC.

Local television showed bodies scattered over a rural hillside next to the Atlantic Ocean. Madeira, off northwestern Africa, is a popular vacation destination for Europeans due to its mild climate and lush, hilly landscape.

The dead included 18 women and 11 men, one of whom died later at a hospital, Sousa told public broadcaster RTP.

Ah, India. You never disappoint.

At least 44 dead as bus plunges off Indian mountain road

Oh, and this:

"Around 78 to 80 people were on board the bus," said Akshay Sood, a senior civil servant in Kullu district, where the accident took place.

If that's the bus in the photo, I wouldn't think 80 people possible. Except that I've taken just such an overcrowded bus ride in Nepal on some seriously fucked up mountain roads. So I know they do it.

Bus plunges into river, killing 24 in northwest Pakistan

Pakistani police say a bus has fallen off a mountainous road into a river, killing at least 24 passengers and injuring two in the country's northwest.

Senior officer Raja Abdul Saboor says all those aboard the bus were members of an extended family from Upper Kohistan District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

They were returning after attending a wedding ceremony when the accident happened on Friday in Kandian area of the district.

Saboor says police and volunteers faced difficulties in rescue and search efforts in the remote mountainous terrain due to unavailability of equipment and necessary resources.

Such road accidents often took place in Pakistan where motorists largely disregard traffic rules and safety standards on battered roads, particularly in the mountainous terrain in the north.

They've corrected it. And it doesn't matter if it's 500 or 1600 feet, it's only the last foot that dangerous.

SAN MATEO COUNTY (CNN/KRON) — A car plunged off a cliff and the shocking moment was caught on camera.

The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office released video Wednesday showing a dark colored SUV speeding along the shoulder on Highway 1 near Gray Whale Cove before driving off the cliff.

The car doesn’t slow down before driving off the cliff and disappearing from the frame.

The base of the cliff has water that reaches up to 40 feet deep.

Search crews went looking for the car and the driver but only found tracks and car parts.

Authorities are now investigating.

Iran bus crash kills at least 19 on mountain road

TEHRAN: At least 19 people were killed and 24 injured in northern Iran when a bus plunged off a mountain road into a ravine before dawn on Thursday (Jan 9), local news agencies reported.

Brake failure was believed to have caused the accident in Mazandaran province, 150km northeast of Tehran, official news agency IRNA said.

The bus was travelling between the capital and Gonbad-e-Kavous, a historic town near Turkmenistan renowned for its 11th-century brick tower, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
