Abe Vigoda best known for his role as Detective Fish in Barney Miller (a comedy TV show centered around a New York Police Precinct) back in the 1970's and he also played a role in The Godfather.

Yes he is still alive, working even. Much to my surprise too, because his whole schtick even back when he did Barney Miller was that he was an old detective, close to retirement. He is in his 90's now, I believe.

Actually, I thought he WAS dead (not that I had heard a report of his death, I just sort of assumed given his age back when I used to watch him on TV) until I saw him at the end of that Snickers bar commercial.

I would say "no." Once there is a public announcement that someone is gravely ill or mortally injured, they are out of bounds for the dead pool, unless already selected and posted before the announcement is public.
