World Cup thread

Post by Anaxagoras »

I guess the big story so far is Holland absolutely ass-raping defending champion Spain in their first match.

(Edited to remove dead links)

Spain's only goal came on a PK. Holland's were all pretty good.

SOMETHING HAPPENED!! http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u264 ... 88b798.gif

The blue guys hit the ball while the white guys stood around and now they are getting all gay with one another.

It is the English team after all.

Not . . . that there is anything wrong with that.

No, wait, what am I thinking?! The English are white!

But now the English are getting gay.

I do not know if I can handle this excitement!!11!! http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u264 ... fc871a.gif

I thought it was a particularly good use of the Wronski Feint... but if Ireland doesn't upgrade their broomsticks they'll find themselves outmatched in coming years.

I was only able to watch the first half of the USA match and I missed the first goal because I went to put on a kettle of water to make coffee when the match wasn't even started yet and then I went to the bathroom and by the time I got back they were already up 1-0.
I see the went on to win 2-1, so I guess I missed a good second half. Oh well.

Truth be told I [Stole.--Ed.] acquired it from a friend who uses it to explain to his European friends why 'Mericans hate soccer. He offered this as a rebuttal:

http://nbcsports700level.files.wordpres ... =498&h=280

But, yeah, the flopping is a major problem. Particularly when one of the criticisms of the USA!USA!USA! team is that they do not know who to "sell" penalties.

How exactly is that a rebuttal?

They both got up immediately and didn't pretend to be severely injured.

Did a typical bench-clearing brawl ensue after that play? Looks like the type of play that might spark one.

Unlike the pansies who play soccerball.

--J.D.

P.S.
I recall the play and the benches did not "empty" since that was the "standard way of playing." In 2007, San Diego got screwed out of a playoff birth from such a play. Both players were concussed and the umpire erroneously called the runner "safe" despite the fact he never actually touched the plate. Colorado Rockies win . . . go one to lose 4 straight to the Glorious Red Sox in the World Series. That play caused a lot of consternation. Old Luddites like Tim Kurchinanmyvaginaisbleeding wailed about how fans would HATE a replay. Sure. Colorado Rockies fans would, but the San Diego Padres fans felt quite otherwise . . . each time the play was replayed showing the runner was out.

THIS play a few years later sort of pushed MLB--seeing NFL and now NHL dealing with concussions--to enforce their own rules.

In neither case were either players carted off in orange boats.

Ah, so more of a "counterpoint" than a "rebuttal" really.

Good comparison.

Those two guys falling down in feigned agony is priceless though. Just like little kids trying to get Dad to punish the other one.

And that is what soccer is.

Which is my it is not respected.

To be fair, the same criticism may be leveled to the NBA where "Stars" can do whatever they want and "draw fouls" by basically crashing into defenders on the way to the basket.

Maybe if you got that cock out of your mouth you might be able to get the words out right. Stick to pictures. They are prettier than the foul stuff coming out of your mouth.

That's the thing with soccer, though. FIFA (ha!) can take care of the diving in a matter of months. Start putting in fines and suspensions for people who dive and see the practice disappear.
