Perhaps you'll find something useful here: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/window ... blems.html?
The guys on that site are very helpful.

I'll go through the update myself one of these days… :?

Uninstalled from my netbook and went back to 7. Damn thing's virtually unusable on a low spec machine.

Upgrade done (~ 20 mn) without a hiccup – just remember to pull the key before the first restart. AVG antivirus wanted to be reinstalled afterwards, that was the most annoying part.

Pyrrho's machine must be jinxed, may I suggest hanging some garlic around the screen? 8)

Going to try it again tonight. Pulled the ancient SCSI card, ran CCleaner to clear up old crap, will uninstall Avast and MSE, then will run the update from the ISO or from the DVD I burned.

Did you boot from the USB or did you run setup from the USB after starting your original Windows?

Just ran setup (I'm the lazy type…).

After upgrade you'll presumably want to debloat W10 and make W10 shutup. (Seems some W7 & W8.1 upgrades also make our machines talk back to Redmond.)

Well that worked. Meh. We'll see if I roll back to 7 in a few weeks. I see they removed all the themes except for the high contrast ones and their Windows 10 default and my custom themes. Oh well, maybe I can restore them from backup or something. Not that I care much.

Had to remove and reinstall the display driver but otherwise Windows 10 really mostly looks like a new skin on an old horse.

Now, presumable, the deadline to upgrade to Win 10 for free is tomorrow. I'll bet a month of my avatar that gets extended within a month of the expiration.

Truly.

Or you can turn off the internet. Or you can set up a proxy layer and block Cortana through there.

Microsoft made an interesting decision with Windows 10’s Anniversary Update, which is now in its final stages of development before it rolls out on August 2.

Cortana, the personal digital assistant that replaced Windows 10’s search function and taps into Bing’s servers to answer your queries with contextual awareness, no longer has an off switch.

Wait...so if I search my machine for JPG files, Cortana is going to check with Bing?

Some W10 matter:

Program compatibility

My trusty sidebar launcher worked till 8.1, but the 10 upgrade proved fatal. Tried reinstall, compatibility tweaks, nope.
So I portabilized it with Cameyo (on a clean XP VM) – works splendidly, drag & drop, the full works. And it's now portable!

Worth a try if you have problems with antique software…

Getting Safe Boot back

Instructions distilled from some site:
  • Win + X, admin command prompt, type bcdedit /copy {current} /d "Windows 10 Safe Mode" (or any title you fancy);
  • launch msconfig, System configuration, boot tab;
  • select the just created "Windows 10 Safe Mode" entry, tick Safe boot, Minimal & Make all boot settings permanent, click OK.
Same method for implementing other boot options. You may want to diminish the timeout (min. 3 s).

Hope it'll be useful.

Excellent. Thank you.

Edited to add: Or so I thought.

On second reboot my system became inoperable and I had to use every failsafe and backup option I had to get things up and running again. Use with extreme caution!

Sorry to hear that, Asthmatic! :(

For me it worked first time, and still works:

http://2.1m.yt/aHlKMsi.png

I'm running W10 home version 1511, build 10586.545.

Perhaps it's time you look into your system's health? I'd go to https://www.sysnative.com/forums/ and describe what happened on the W10 forum. They'll probably send you some small tools & scripts to analyze your machine. At least that's what they did when my laptop started rejecting updates. (Everything runs smoothly since then.)

Or your machine is just jinxed (I blame sparks, of course) and you have to hang some garlic around the screen…

It's OK, Witness! I'm the kind of person who makes backups of backups. :D

I got the same screen as above but I think the USB drivers failed to load so I couldn't use mouse or keyboard, then it automatically booted into safe mode and I couldn't do anything! All solved in half an hour but wouldn't have been were I less cautious.

Reckon so, Abdul, reckon so.

Just out of curiosity, I tried the tweak again and the same thing happened. I think it's likely the USB keyboard and mouse I'm using, I've had problems for years with Windows being flaky installing USB drivers at boot. PS2 forever! (Except this machine only has one PS2 port.)

asthmatic camel wrote:[…]I've had problems for years with Windows being flaky installing USB drivers at boot.
I don't know what you mean by "installing drivers at boot". And "for years"! For me it would be priority n° 1 to get rid of that. Now is it really Windows or some hardware? I refer you again to the site I mentioned…

Quite to the contrary all USB stuff works flawlessly on my two W10 machines. I routinely switch from one to the other: Wacom tablet, keyboard (even for the laptop, it's a very pleasant kb), mouse (with cord), mouse (with USB Bluetooth receiver) and of course various HDs, thumbdrives, card readers and my old scanner (driven from a XP VM).

I'm not sure if it's necessarily Windows to blame, Witness but I've found on several machines that USB keyboards and mice often don't work in time to enter BIOS at boot. The tweak above caused the ones I'm using not to work at all!
