Hear that. When the current laptop PC dies, and Gawd graciously apologizes for my miserable life by giving me a new job, I plan to look at a Mac. Probably won't be able to afford one, but I can dream can't I? :)ed wrote:I'm beginning to come around on that.

Re: Windows 10
Stupid question ... is a mac that is four years old effectively the same as a new one?

Re: Windows 10
I expect they've done some tweaks to the OS in the past 4 years. And the hardware too.
Doc?
And remember, no stupid questions. Only stupid answers.
Wait....

Re: Windows 10
I'll let it run again tonight after I run a backup.
Thing is...every time it fails, it goes ahead and starts downloading the update files again.

Although it had claimed to check just hours before, when I did a manual check it offered me the update.

I don't think it attempts to update everybody on the same day. Perhaps by asking for it you forced it.

That's right. I don't take any crap from Microsoft.
You give me that update, and you give it now.

Failed twice on mine. Gets to 87 percent and rolls back. I can't interpret the logs. Allegedly doesn't like some driver. I think I'll upgrade the video card next weekend. I'll be on vacation and will have time to drive myself nuts.

I have this error also 0xc1900101, I pressed the pause update for 35 days. Should be enough time to order a mac book pro.
What a complete waste of precious this is. I started the update on my desktop after breakfast and it didn't complete till after my lunch, some 7 hours later. I then decided to time the update on what I thought would be the fastest of the 4 family laptops we have, a Lenovo Z50 series. All 4 started the update at the same time. These are the times to the nearest minute: Initializing - 22, Preparing to install – 1 Hour 8 mins, Awaiting install –16, Downloading – 6, Installing – 2 hours 39 mins, Restart, configuring, updating – 1 hour 33 mins, After login - 48 mins. A total of 7 hours 16 minutes. Put into perspective, I could have started this update and assuming someone clicked restart, could have driven 11 miles to my local golf course, played 18 holes, showered, had a beer or two and driven home to find the update still in progress. (To be honest the Asus FX 503 beat the Lenovo Z50 by just under two minutes, the Lenovo Thinkpad X121E was by far the slowest at 8 hours 27 minutes). Totally ridiculous in my view. Can't Windows do better than this or at the very least warn users that the upgrade is so time consuming?

New updates were available today ( :? ). Downloading + installing (numerous restarts) ~ 1/2 hour.
Both machines seem OK.

Funny, I mentioned this to a student for whom reality involves Linux. When I mentioned "Windows 10 latest update" he started laughing hysterically.

Windows error log reports that "The Stereo system failed to start."
Now what could have happened to my Stereo system?

↑ I presume this question is rhetorical…
My laptop, which boots from HD, has seen its boot time go from 1:15 – 1:30 down to mostly under 1 mn. (Desktop boots from SSD, noticed no difference.)
Till the next upgrade. :P

Could it be a bit of malware that was removed, but something's still trying to call it?Pyrrho wrote:The Stereo Service service failed to start due to the following error:

I don't know of anything in Windows called the "Stereo Service".
I mean, they never fixed my stereos before.

It's something to do with the Nvidia card I have in the system. Seems that it installs an audio driver although I don't think the card has an audio port.

Re: Windows 10
Automatic update continues to fail for unknown reasons--gives an error code that merely signifies the fact that it failed and rolled back to the previous version. Error log--a mystery to anyone not a software engineer--and I'm guessing here--appears to indicate that it can't read certain directories. Tried it with a "clean boot" and no luck, so next I'll try updating manually.

So now... I was playing an RPG and the damned update notification minimized the game... I clicked Remind me later to dismiss the notification and the display is in an infinite loop of flashing.

I will content myself with booting up my old Windows XP system so I can see what's on these old 150 meg Bernoulli disks I dug out of storage.

Re: Windows 10
This last update was fucked up. Took forever and now there's odd glitches here and there. For example starting or stopping an old CoD game freezes the screen for several seconds. It does start and stop but the screen freeze is really annoying and makes me wonder what is going wrong that will get really ugly later on.
