Hockey, pre-mask era

Damn, did you know that in the olden days hockey players including the goalie didn't wear masks? The puck was just as heavy and the shots were just as hard in those days too. But the goalie had no mask. Crazy shit. Check out this guy, Terry Sawchuck, a goalie from the pre-mask era:

Sorry I missed this.

I showed the documentary I mentioned: "Miracles and Men" about the Godless Commie Soviet hockey team from 1980. In it was footage of previous games between the Typical Canadians and Ruskies.

No one had helmets.

One Canadian threatened a ref with his stick.

How things have changed.

But yes, goalies did not often wear masks. The "Goalie Mask" made famous by The Japanese Original Jason:

was almost worse than useless: you think you have protection.

Gerry Cheevers, I'm sure DocX knows him. He would put a piece of black tape or somethin to that effect on his mask indicating where he may have gotten a scar had he not had the mask in place. He was one of the first to wear them. If I'm not mistaking Jaques Plante was credited with the invention.
