https://www.theguardian.com/environment ... hurricanes22 disasters, 262 dead, $95bn in damages: US saw record year for climate-driven catastrophes
Report shows US was battered by punishing extreme weather on both the east and west coasts in 2020
The US was battered by a record number of weather and climate-driven disasters in 2020 as extensive wildfires scorched the west, hurricanes in quick succession pummeled the east and extreme heat swept across the heart of the country, a new federal government report has shown.
A total of 22 major disasters, defined as each causing at least $1bn in damage, swept the US last year, six more than the previous record, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa).
At least 262 people died, with $95bn in total damages recorded, the federal agency reported on Friday.
The year was marked by punishing extremes on both the east and west coasts. It was the most active wildfire year on record in the US west, with California recording five of the six biggest fires in its history, an outbreak that destroyed thousands of homes and caused the sky to turn an apocalyptic orange over the San Francisco Bay Area.
A total of 10.3m acres burned in wildfires in 2020 across the US west, an area larger than Maryland and well above this century’s average.
On the eastern seaboard and Gulf of Mexico, a record 12 tropical storms made landfall during a year when forecasters had to turn to the Greek alphabet for storms’ names because the sheer number of events had exhausted the planned list of names.
Seven of these caused more than $1bn in damage, including hurricanes Laura and Sally, which hit the US south in quick succession in August and September. Three hurricanes and two tropical storms hit Louisiana alone.
A major drought and heatwave blasted the US west last year, there were three major tornado-related disasters and a highly destructive derecho, which is an event driven by fast-moving thunderstorms, that downed power lines, damaged houses and flattened crops in the midwest.
Noaa reported that last year was the fifth hottest on record across the contiguous US, which follows a longer-term pattern of national and global heating – all of the five warmest years on record in the US have occurred since 2012.

https://www.kplctv.com/2021/01/28/oberl ... -cemetery/Oberlin family denied a burial plot in ‘whites only’ cemetery
LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - An Allen Parish Sheriff’s Deputy died Sunday and when his wife went to meet with a cemetery, she was shocked to hear her husband couldn’t be buried there. As it turns out, Oaklin Springs Cemetery in Oberlin only allows certain races to be buried there.
Deputy Darrell Semien was diagnosed with cancer in December. In the last month and 9 days of his life, Semien talked with his family about burial plans, telling them he wanted to be laid to rest at Oaklin Springs Cemetery because it was close to home.
“It was in their by-laws that the cemetery was ‘whites only,’” says widow Karla Semien. “I just kinda looked at her and she said ‘there’s no coloreds allowed.’”
“Just blatantly, with no remorse, I can’t sell you a plot for your husband,” says Semien’s daughter, Kimberly Curly.
The President of the Oaklin Springs Cemetery Association, Creig Vizena, outlined the clause in their by-laws, which says “the right of burial of the remains of white human beings...” It’s a cemetery contract which he says dates back to the 50′s.
“It never came up,” says Vizena. “I take full responsibility for that. I’ve been the President of this board for several years now. I take full responsibility for not reading the by-laws.”

https://old.reddit.com/r/liberalgunowne ... im_scared/Ooooh you've...never been to a gun show, have you?
I gather a lot of people in this thread haven't.
I've never been to a gun show, even in Southern California, that didn't have at least one table of a guy selling "WWII Memorabilia" that was strangely focused on Germany with signs about "free speech" plastered around the table.
If you're feeling brave, talk to the vendor and play excuse bingo. Make a card ahead of time with a friend and see who wins!
I think the ultimate swing I heard was "I'm selling these as an expression of political freedom of expression. These are to make a point that every point of view should be considered regardless of personal feeling."
"Ok...so...why do you have like ten versions of swastika, three different SS patches, and a death's head patch alongside a bunch of (mostly southern) state flags and POWMIA patchs?"
"Well this is the kind of stuff you never see and it's important that people be familiar with it so they understand there's different points of view out there than just the ones they're comfortable with."
The lengths people go to is...astounding.

https://www.military.com/daily-news/202 ... -deal.htmlFor the First Time in 2 Decades, the US Has Gone a Year Without a Combat Death in Afghanistan
KABUL, Afghanistan — No U.S. troops have died in combat in Afghanistan for a year as of Monday, but the Taliban have threatened to target them again if Washington opts to keep international forces in the country after a May withdrawal deadline.
Army Sgts. 1st Class Javier Gutierrez and Antonio Rodriguez were the last Americans to die in battle in Afghanistan on Feb. 8, 2020. Two other service members — Army Staff Sgt. Ian McLaughlin and Army Pfc. Miguel Villalon — were killed in combat there in January last year.
Weeks after their deaths, the U.S. and Taliban signed a deal under which Washington pledged to fully withdraw U.S.-led international forces from the country by May 1 of this year provided the Taliban held up its end of the agreement, including stopping attacks on foreign troops, and barring terrorist groups such as al-Qaida from using Afghanistan as a springboard to attack the U.S. or its allies.
Several military officials and lawmakers have said the Talban also agreed verbally to reduce violence in the country, although that is not included in the text of the agreement made public last year.
Despite the February deal, which was brokered by the Trump administration, violence surged last year and United Nations’ officials have said al-Qaida remains “heavily embedded” with the Taliban.
After President Joe Biden took office last month, national security adviser Jake Sullivan said the U.S. was “taking a hard look at the extent to which the Taliban are complying” with the deal as Washington weighs “our force posture and our diplomatic strategy” in Afghanistan.
A report released last week by a panel set up by Congress to study the deal called for the withdrawal deadline to be pushed back.

https://edition.cnn.com/2021/02/15/us/v ... index.htmlHundreds of people are volunteering to escort elderly Asian Americans to help keep them safe
More than 2,808 firsthand accounts of anti-Asian hate from 47 states and the District of Columbia were reported between March 19 and December 31, 2020, with 7.3% of those incidents involving Asian Americans over the age of 60, according to a report by Stop AAPI Hate, a coalition documenting anti-Asian hate and discrimination amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
A recent surge in attacks on older Asian Americans in the Bay Area has heightened concerns among activist and leaders in the community.
Exhausted by the violence, Azevedo offered on social media to walk with anyone in Oakland's Chinatown neighborhood to help them feel safe.
"I wasn't intending to be some kind of vigilante," Azevedo, 26, told CNN. "I just wanted to offer people some kind of comfort."
His idea quickly resonated throughout the community and within days he had nearly 300 volunteers reaching out to join him to protect the community in a project now called Compassion in Oakland.

COLORADO CITY, Texas — Colorado City Mayor Tim Boyd has resigned.
Boyd acknowledged the resignation Tuesday afternoon while responding to criticism he received for a controversial Facebook post.
Tuesday morning, Boyd voiced his frustrations about residents who he said called him to complain about power and water outages.
Full text from original post
No one owes you or your family anything; nor is it the local governments responsibility to support you during trying times like this! Sink or swim, it’s your choice! The City and County, along with power providers or any other service owes you NOTHING! I’m sick and tired of people looking for a damn hand out! If you don’t have electricity you step up and come up with a game plan to keep your family warm and safe. If you have no water you deal with out and think outside of the box to survive and supply water to your family. If you were sitting at home in the cold because you have no power and are sitting there waiting for someone to come rescue you because your lazy is direct result of your raising! Only the strong will survive and the week will perish. Folks, God Has given us the tools to support ourselves in times like this. This is sadly a product of a socialist government where they feed people to believe that the FEW work and others will become dependent for handouts. Am I sorry that you have been dealing without electricity and water; yes! But I’ll be damned if I’m going to provide for anyone that is capable of doing it themselves! We have lost sight of those in need and those that take advantage of the system and mesh them into one group!! Bottom line, quit crying and looking for a handout! Get off your ass and take care of your own family!
Bottom line - DON’T BE A PART OF A PROBLEM, BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION!
"Only the strong will survive and the week will perish." That's what Mussolini cheered about when his troops invaded Yugoslavia.

https://www.denverpost.com/2017/11/30/c ... -cost-iud/IUD program leads to big decline in teen pregnancies, abortions in Colorado
State avoided spending nearly $70 million to care for babies of low-income teens, study says.
The steep drop in teen pregnancies and abortions in Colorado since 2009 is mainly due to one thing: free, low-cost access to IUDs.
Intrauterine devices — tiny, T-shaped pieces of plastic placed in the uterus — are the main reason Colorado’s teen birth rate fell 54 percent and the teen abortion rate declined 64 percent in the last eight years, state health officials said Thursday.
The astounding numbers, capturing the eight-year period since IUDs became an affordable option for low-income health clinics, were released along with a study estimating the state avoided paying nearly $70 million for labor and delivery, well-baby check-ups, food stamps and child-care assistance because of fewer births to teen moms.
“This is one of the biggest public-health home runs that I’ve seen in my 35-year public-health career,” said Dr. John Douglas, executive director of the Tri-County Health Department, which has six clinics in Douglas, Arapahoe and Adams counties. “The work that’s happened is really striking.”
Thanks to a grant from billionaire Warren Buffett’s family, Colorado spent $28 million during eight years supplying IUDs to 75 public health clinics throughout the state, several based inside high schools. From 2009 to 2016, the program provided 43,713 contraceptive implants to women, plus trained medical staff on how to insert the devices.
“Because of that, everything changed,” said Jody Camp, who oversees the state health department’s family planning program. “People started hearing about it, saying ‘Wait, I can get one of those (IUDs) that my girlfriends with insurance have?’ It caught on like wildfire in a really important way.”
Before 2009, clinics typically couldn’t afford to spend up to $350 per patient who wanted an IUD, instead offering lower-cost options including the patch, monthly contraception shots or birth-control pills, which cost a clinic as little as $1 per pack. Some clinics, including in Tri-County, had an IUD wait list.
Pills, patches and rings often aren’t reliable birth control for teens and young women, Camp said. IUDs, though, can prevent pregnancy for three, five or even 10 years, depending on the type.
“That can change the trajectory of your life,” she said.
It makes little Jesus cry.

Hmm. I wonder why?
Just kidding.
We all know why.
