I felt sad and angry. If I’d been raping kids, I wouldn’t be thrown out of the club.

– Former Fr. Tim Stier
Tim Stier figured it was only a matter of time. Since 2005 he’s refused parish assignments as an Oakland Diocese priest over its handling of clerical sex abuse claims and spent more than a decade outside its cathedral on Sundays calling for church accountability and justice for the victims.

He had no plans to end his self-imposed exile and resume work as a parish priest. But when the Vatican finally came for his collar a few months ago, removing him from the Roman Catholic priesthood, Stier said it still felt like a blow.

“It hit me harder than I’d expected,” said Stier, 73, whose removal was disclosed this week. “I felt sad and angry. If I’d been raping kids, I wouldn’t be thrown out of the club.”

["Snip!" – Ed.]

But Stier, as he has been for the last 17 years, remains unsparing in his criticism of the diocese over the scandal that has rocked the Roman Catholic church locally and around the world since it first came to light in the 1980s and 1990s through criminal prosecutions of priests and lawsuits.

["Snip!" – Ed.]

But critics have since accused church leaders around the country of failing to fully account for their role in enabling abuse. A 2018 Pennsylvania grand jury report found more than 300 priests had abused more than 1,000 kids in six of the state’s eight Catholic dioceses. The report found church leaders “brushed aside” victims’ claims and “preferred to protect the abusers and their institution above all” by “concealing the truth.”

The report prompted similar probes in other states, including California, where it remains ongoing. It also led many dioceses, including Oakland and San Jose, to publish or expand their lists of credibly accused clergy.

Still, critics, including SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, and Stier, who is close with that group’s leaders, have said the dioceses’ disclosures were incomplete and failed to address bishops’ roles in perpetuating the abuse.

In his May 31 farewell letter to some 60 Oakland Diocese priests, Stier wrote of his dismay that Oakland Bishop Michael C. Barber hasn’t held retired Bishop emeritus John S. Cummins accountable for his role in allegedly enabling the abuse by credibly accused priests the diocese has named.

["Snip!" – Ed.]

But Stier grew increasingly frustrated by what he felt was a church that was lowering its standards for priests to fill vacancies while refusing to reconsider policies and teachings he believes contribute to the problem – priestly celibacy, refusal to ordain women and opposition to homosexuality.

["Snip!" – Ed.]

Two years ago, he said he received a notice from the diocese that the bishop wanted to remove him from the priesthood, in a process known as laicization. He refused to cooperate, and the diocese told him in May that the Vatican had laicized him March 19.

SNAP said in response that “when many in Oakland were silent about this ongoing problem, Tim Stier chose not to be. In response, he has been punished.”

From the Japanese Original Unforgiven.

Yes!

In an odd turnabout, the Japanese Originals decided to use a FREEDOM film rather than the other way around. It is very good. Those who call it a "shot-for-shot" remake of the Clint Eastwood Original™ did not see either film, apparently.

It is much more realistic about the treatment of the women. They are "whores" –遊女– and that is all that any think of them. The owner, as in Japanese Original situations, cares about his loss of money. The brother who did not slash up the girl is far more upset, which makes his treatment all the more interesting. His brother who did the damage is a 24-7 Cunt.

I am waiting for the appearance of English Bob Korean Aho.

Spoiler:
A big part of English Bob's character (IMO) is the whole shtick about how it's easier to assasinate a President than royalty, before Little Bill re-educates him. What's his big speech on the "train" in this version?

He pontificates to a bespectacled whimpy writer about how he killed six men at once. When Whimp-Lo marvels, he scoffs about how easy it is for someone as awesome as him to do it. As he starts to tell his story, Two Guys out of Trading Places recognize him and call him out.

The actor who plays the part is a fantastic actor upon whom I could pontificate. He makes a big show of having Serving Wench formally hand his katana [Long sword – Ed.] to the man with the biggest mouth and offer him to take it and go outside.

So they do.

Big Mouth tries to draw the sword . . . and cannot! Not English Bob draws his sword as Big Mouth complains that he cannot draw the sword he gave him. Not English Bob sneers that the man never, ever, drew a sword, spares him and his friend to the general admiration of everyone.

Then Not Little Bill shows up.

He picks up the sword Not English Bob gave him and notices that – there are these two side tools in the scabbard of a katana. On is a small sort of utility knife, the other is, I am not making this up, to be used to clean your ears! THAT one is bent to jam the sword!

He then reminds Not English Bob that there is a "leave swords and guns at the town entrance" law, and, get with the Meiji Restoration, you should not be carrying the swords.

Here is where it comes back to the Eastwoodian Original: after Not English Bob gives up his katana, he starts to walk away, and Not Little Bill reminds him of his wakazashi – the shorter sword. After Not English Bob gives it up, Not Little Bill kicks the living shit out of him.

I do not think it is July 4th, though.

The prison scene is not as long – he is not "The Duck of Death" – but he is humiliated already then put in a cart with the instructions to dump him at the entrance of the town.

Not bad for an adaption.

I think it does a decent job of translating it to Japan at the time of the Meiji Restoration. Worth a watch, particularly if you loved the Eastwoodian Original.

You never want to lie to your audience . . . you can trick them, you can disturb them, you can annoy them, but you can never lie to them. To me commercials are nothing but lies.

– Don Hertzfeldt, on refusing to do commercials, commentary to Rejected
– J. "I Feel Fat . . . and Sassy!" D.
A film historian claimed this sequence was one of the most disturbing things she'd ever seen. She compared it to Nazi Germany or something.

– Don Hertzfeld, commenting on the "My Anus is Bleeding" sequence
The Japanese Original Linkypoo:

stay until the end. Crab People! CRAB PEOPLE!
This comment could be a Thought for the Day itself:
Blink Pink: The on-campus therapist/counselor at the Art Institute of Seattle in the year 2004 handed out sheets at orientation that gave out information on how to access various mental health resources at the school. Along the bottom was a chain of the dancing thingies. I went up to her after and congratulated her for being an animation nerd and asked her where she had seen Rejected originally. She was confused and had no idea who Don Hertzfeldt was, she just liked her "little dancing cloud duders". I saw her a week later and she had looked up the cartoon. She told me I was a horrible person who had ruined everything for her, because she had been putting them on handouts for years, and now all she could think about was bleeding anuses ... I'll remember that moment on my deathbed.

On the movies I would go over the fight scene with him. I'd say, "You move here. Then you kill 15 guys." He'd say, "You want me to kill 15 guys at once?" "Yes, please," I'd say.
