The Community's Art Gallery
We definitely need one. So let me start with this nice hijacking of what the Froggies call "art pompier" (not sure how to translate that: academic/conventional art/kitsch?) by Latvian artist Arthur Berzinsh:
NSFW:
P. – S. Is it possible to mark a whole thread as NSFW? It's a bit tiring to do so on individual images – but then I'm not surfing at my boss' expenses…

Hmmm… Not everything will be so. (I think. :notsure: )Abdul Alhazred wrote:You can always put 'NSFW' in the subject line if that's what you want.
OK, to escape the wrath of Boss Paul – quite active these last days –, some very safe and Murican art: pepper by Edward Weston.

The second, long-lost version of Caravaggio's Judith Beheading Holofernes might have been rediscovered in the hands of private owners in France, Le Quotidien de l'art reports.
Caravaggio painted two versions of the biblical scene in which Judith beheads the Assyrian general Holofernes to defend her beleaguered city. The first version, painted in Rome, is currently on display at the National Gallery of Ancient Art, at Pallazo Barberini. However, the second version, which was painted in Naples, has been missing without a trace since the early 17th century, according to Le Figaro.
While the authenticity of the painting found in France is still being established, the Ministry of Culture has already placed a preemptive ban on its exit from the country, following interest reportedly expressed by an unnamed American museum to acquire the masterpiece.
[…]
The mysterious second version was mentioned by the Flemish painter Frans Pourbus the Younger in a letter penned in 1607 in which he claimed to have seen the famous work in the studio of the painter Louis Finson.
If authenticated, the painting could be worth €100 million ($113 million). However, the Caravaggio specialist Mina Gregori says she hasn't found the touch of the master's hand in the painting found in France. But, according to Le Figaro, some of her recent attributions have been misguided, so her verdict isn't final.
The Italian experts and Caravaggio specialists Giuseppe Porzio and Maria Cristina Terzaghi are slated to weigh in on the painting in the coming weeks.

For now one of the strange paintings of Balthus:

I've seen he spent WWII in Fribourg (Switzerland), where they put up a plaque. The irony is that, from the dates, he immediately left when the war ended.

↑ Excellent. The professional ones, no miracle there. One should put some of them through DeepArt…
On the one hand, we all drag along ~ 4000 years (at least!) of visual culture.
On the other, I always wondered how people who watch television ~ 4 hours/day can take so lousy pictures.

http://www.demilked.com/magazine/wp-con ... ette-8.jpgAmerican artist Ra Paulette digs cathedral-like art caves into the sandstone cliffs of Northern New Mexico. After being cut off from most of his projects due to artistic differences between him and his commissioners, the artist decided to start his own personal and independent project and to dedicate 10 years of his life to dig a cave subject only to his own artistic vision.

Degas, Place de la Concorde, 1873 (some say 1875). Could go in the "Past" thread.
Degas had a very "photographic" way of framing his subjects in his paintings.

↑ Aha! The sugary Moravian Freemason! (Thanks Wikipedia… ) But even for an "illustrator", once his work is on an umbrella, it becomes:

And he alas also produced this kind of painting:

So I really prefer the earlier and rougher ribaldry of Toulouse-Lautrec, e. g.:

As most old Oriental carpets have of course disappeared, their representation on paintings interests historians of the subject a lot, e. g. by the Flemish Masters:
http://www.wga.hu/art/m/master/zunk_fl/ ... adorat.jpg
(unknown master)
Now the oldest surviving carpet (ca. 2400 years old) comes presumably from the Pazyryk burials:

(note that some internal anatomy seems to be represented)
http://kavehfarrokh.com/wp-content/uplo ... ryk-11.png
(Scythian warriors?)
Wikipedia wrote:Pazyryk carpet
One of the most famous finds at Pazyryk is the Pazyryk carpet, which is probably the oldest surviving carpet in the world. It measures 183×200 cm and has a knot density of approximately 360 000 knots per square meter, which is a higher knot density than most modern carpets. The middle of the carpet consists of a ribbon motif, while in the border there is a procession with deers and in another border warriors on horses. The Pazyryk carpet was probably manufactured in East Turkistan around 400 B.C. When it was found it had been deeply frozen in a block of ice, which is why it is so well-preserved. The carpet can be seen at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.

I have an interest in obscure things. On reflection, it is probably becasue if no one else knows anything about the subject, it is easy to be an "expert" and diminsish those about you. Sort of in the land of blind men a one eyed man is king thing.
Anyway, a few years ago I came across this at a flea market in CT
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... ohnson.jpg
I thought that the peace had merit and looked into the artist. One Charles Howard Johnson
A sad sad story. Guy had talent, moved to NY, got married, had a daughter, illustrated for Life and Look and a bunch of rags of the time. There were even a few writeups which characterized him as a leader of the art movement in NY. He had shows.
Fucker, just when he had the world by the balls, dropped dead at age 28 in 1896.
Obit is here
http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-fr ... ref=slogin
It was really sad. Guy had talent and everything going for him, was a "celebrity" of the time. Now I bet no one here even heard of him.
Anyhoo, felt bad and did his bio on wiki
