Kim Dotcom v. John McAfee

Post by Rob Lister »

We all know and loath John McAfee.

Who is Kim Dotcom? If you have to ask, you've been living under a pirate's rock.

Here's his wiki

Anywho ...
Kim Dotcom & John McAfee “At War” Over Megaupload 2.0 Revelations

Kim Dotcom has made a surprise announcement relating to his under-development Megaupload 2.0 project. The entrepreneur informs TorrentFreak that John McAfee's MGT Capital Investments offered to invest $30m plus stock into the business but it soon became clear that the aim was to drive up the stock price at MGT. Now, it appears, McAfee and Dotcom are at war.

To celebrate the five year anniversary of the Megaupload raids, in January 2017 Kim Dotcom hopes to deliver a brand new file-sharing system to the masses.

Provisionally titled Megaupload 2.0, Dotcom says the system will take decentralization, anonymity & encryption “to the next level” by connecting file transfers to bitcoin transactions.

Importantly, the new iteration of Megaupload will launch with the original Megaupload’s user database, which could potentially mean 100 million users checking in shortly after launch. Unsurprisingly then, news of the project has been generating a lot of interest online, even before any hard technical details have been made public.

While Dotcom is yet to reveal any of his investment partners, he has just made a surprise announcement concerning who he won’t be doing business with. It began with a tweet in which Dotcom claimed he’d been offered cash to participate in what he saw as a “pump and dump” deal.
Stay away from $MGT. They offered $500k for a no-substance partnership announcement with the sole purpose to pump up $MGT stock. I declined.

The MGT to which Dotcom refers is MGT Capital Investments, a company which advertises itself as dealing with cyber threats “through advanced protection technologies for mobile and personal tech devices.” Early May, security expert John McAfee was confirmed as the company’s new CEO and a chaotic period of stock trading ensued.

Essentially, MGT is steaming pile of nothing. McAfee's scheme was to create substance out of a deal with Kim. Kim wasn't having it, obviously. Then McAfee tried to bribe him outright. That didn't work either.
“They might create substance in the future. They might come up with real products that create real value. But at the moment they are focusing on making announcements to drive up the $MGT stock price instead of creating real value for investors. It’s unethical and that’s why we declined the money and I went public.”
I don't know how either John or Kim have managed to stay out of jail.

In John's case, it is a shame he's managed such. He belongs in a cell. A cell dark and dank.

In Kim's case, I think it is good and proper that he be free. Kim is a uber-smart guy, an uber-nice guy, and probably the most honest almost-a-pirate that ever sailed the internet seas. He did a Q&A on slashdot last year and in the end, you just want to root for him. Plus, he is a hell of a Modern Warfare player; he claims to be the best.

Kim Dotcom can be extradited to US but can also appeal

A long-running effort to extradite file-sharing site mogul Kim Dotcom to the US has been left in limbo after a Supreme Court decision in New Zealand.

The court ruled that he can be returned to the US to face copyright charges - but has also overturned another lower court's decision, effectively granting him the right to appeal.

Mr Dotcom himself described the ruling as a "mixed bag".

The legal wrangling is likely to continue.
I think NZ is just fucking with the U.S. They have zero intention of actually extraditing him.

I find it hilarious.

I think Trump should pardon him.

Here's a somewhat decent thread on /.

If a vote were taken, it would be 90% in favour of not extraditing him.

My bet is the judicial review will exonerate him. The grounds are bullshit, the raid on his house was absurd and entirely done to allow our then-PM, John Key, to impress his golfing pal Obama.

Kim Dotcom is a truly fucking disgusting person, but the way the whole thing was done is a worse outrage.
