I briefly looked at it, and given the experience with 5 decided I'd wait until all the expansion stuff was done and patches made.
Anyone else mess with it?
Anyone try Civ 6?

Re: Anyone try Civ 6?
Haven't played Civ since the early days. I find the older I get, the less patience I have for empire-building games that require managing a lot of details. But if you have the interest and can afford it, it might be worth a try.
One game I found surprisingly addictive is called Darkest Dungeon, a turn-based Lovecraftian dungeon game. For a couple months and over 100 hours of game play anyway. But that was long enough for me to consider that I got my money's worth of enjoyment. I got it via Steam. It was maybe 20 bucks, IIRC.

Actually, yes. Lovecraftian Tentacles. The caves are filled with pelagic horrors.

Re: Anyone try Civ 6?
Haven't gotten to it yet, especially since I'm enjoying Civ V even more now that I discovered the "Quick Turns" mod. One of the biggest problems of the single-player experience has been how long the computer takes for its turn in late game. The biggest reasons relate to the animation settings, but it's frustrating to switch to "quick movement" and "quick combat" instead of watching your tanks maneuver and roll over enemy positions, guns blazing. Some clever person managed to split the difference, letting you specify WHICH moves you want fully animated and which combats you want to see. So I can say that I want to see movement animations from my own side, movement animations from opponents I'm at war with, and use quick animations for everything else--and specify that I want to see all battles.
Even with that minor change the turns are rolling over much faster and it's vastly improved the experience. If I didn't care to see every fight that I'm not even involved in it could be quicker still.

Re: Anyone try Civ 6?
Another one for turn based play--they just released Dominions 5, and though each version isn't exactly cheap, it's a game where the quality keeps improving. They've managed to add features and refine the in-game concepts without making the game inaccessible. There's some complexity to it, but once you "get" it, you think about strategy way more than the game interface.
The core mechanic to understand is that spells require knowledge, power, and fuel in the form of gems. The game is ultimately a race to collect as much of each of those three resources as possible and use them to win the conquests. But a well equipped opponent is no match for a fairly decent sense of military strategy, it seems, so that aspect is not at all neglected.

I'm still on Civ 5. Don't see the reason to upgrade, I think it's is the best one yet.

It's good but I would wait until all the DLCs are out if you're in no rush. It always makes for a better game.RCC: Act II wrote:I briefly looked at it, and given the experience with 5 decided I'd wait until all the expansion stuff was done and patches made.

I do have some criticism, and I am not sure if it was like that in 5, but there's a bit too much micro-management for cities and projects, and religion. Also some leaders are a bit too inflexible and thus predictable.

My plan was to wait until the game is abandoned and buy the whole thing; my computer wouldn't run it anyway.Grammatron wrote:It's good but I would wait until all the DLCs are out if you're in no rush. I read on civfanatics that the AI is a pushover, but then again those guys are obsessives.

It's typical late in the product life cycle, so to speak, for modders to give it a better AI anyway. Held true for 4-5 at least. So I think your strategy is sound.
Heck, it's especially true for SMAC-- some game necromancer gave it an AI boost well after most people had it only in their distant memory.
