Re: One Man and his Fag-o-Cycle
People are generally quite well-behaved when it comes to litter but we also have a small army of street cleaners who work 24/7 to keep the place tidy.
It also helps that dropping litter is an offence, with fines of up to £2500.
SourceLitter legislation
The main piece of legislation covering litter is outlined in part 4 of the EPA. In particular, section 87 of the EPA states that it is a criminal offence to drop, throw down, leave or deposit litter in a public place. The maximum fine for littering of this kind is £2,500 and it can be tried in a magistrate’s court.

Ah yes. Thought so.

I have a couple of these, used by the confederates in the Whitworth gun. Amazingly accurate and with a daunting range.
Note the surfaces in lieu of engraved rifling.
He also developed a standard thread.

I understand that he first became enormously wealthy by developing a standardised screw threaded wrote: ↑Sun Sep 04, 2022 5:17 pmAh yes. Thought so.

WikiIn 1841 Whitworth devised a standard for screw threads with a fixed thread angle of 55° and having a standard pitch for a given diameter. This soon became the first nationally standardised system; its adoption by the railway companies, who until then had all used different screw threads, led to its widespread acceptance. It later became a British Standard, "British Standard Whitworth", abbreviated to BSW and governed by BS 84:1956.
In any case, the Whitworth and its surrounding grounds are one of Manchester's "must sees".

How to become enormously wealthy:
1) Invent standardized screw thread.
2) Profit.
3) ...and relax.

Whitworth wasn't the type to relax: his passion for engineering kept him occupied throughout his life.

I was feeling extremely decadent during my morning spin today and stopped for a shisha pipe: orange kiwi and mint. The perfect way to waste a couple of hours on a Saturday morning listening to BBC Radio 4's Today program. :)

Re: One Man and his Fag-o-Cycle
I never usually see a soul on the roads before 6.30 AM apart from the milkmen but this morning Manchester's roads were rammed with cyclists. I had to sit in Wythenshawe Park for half an hour while all the races got underway. Then I thoroughly embarrassed myself by falling off my bike in front of a huge crowd of spectators.

My road bike's a treacherous bastard at low speeds. Turn a tight corner or hit a pot-hole and it just loves to dump me on the tarmac.

One of these, maybe. I'd probably need a lot less bum butter, too...

I was a lacrosse goalie. Hard as fuck.
The number of times this happened to me doesn't bear thinking about.

Back when I started paragliding, under 100 flights I think, I managed to put myself in a tree near takeoff which required a "tree rescue" from other club members. I was embarrassed about it. But last week sitting around with a group of five other friends, I learned that only one of them had yet to make a "tree landing." Then I was a bit disappointed for not being special anymore.*
* Although, they still refer to that particular tree as "shuize's tree" so that helps.

Re: One Man and his Fag-o-Cycle
They're Veblen goods at those prices; you can get a decent motorbike for under $15k.
...and, from the photos, they aren't even supplied with pedals! :o

Re: One Man and his Fag-o-Cycle
The Bianchi certainly is, although £1100 for a carbon fibre Boardman isn't outrageous. Still, you're right; it might knock 30 seconds off a trip. :)

Put my FagManly-Man-o-Manly-So-Manly-Your-Mom's-Pregnant-Again-and-the-Fleet-is-Not-in-Cycle "down."
It was a kindness.
