Most of the killing didn't happen at Auschwitz, but just outside the town at Birkenau where the Nazis built a larger more modern extermination facility when the original one in Auschwitz proved too small.

It's a tourist destination, so, as tourists, they're obliged to go there.

I live near Stratford-upon-Avon which gets millions of tourists because it's Shakespeare's birthplace. Probably at least half of the tourists have no interest whatsoever in Shakespeare, but still they come.

I say we open up the Chernobyl reactor and let them march into it. Could be a good thing for Fukushima too.

As far as Auschwitz just be content people aren't grabbing handfuls of soil, or chipping away at the buildings for souvenir.

When they say "the basement at Three Mile Island is ...", what is really happening there, is the entire bottom of the reactor building (the basement) is highly radioactive, and they want to wait a hundred years for it to "cool off" enough to try and move the huge amount of radioactive material to somewhere else. Since they have to break up a huge amount of concrete and move it, they actually don't have any idea how to "make safe" the reactor building. Just like Chernobyl, it is just going to be there for a very very long time. Nobody is ever going to move any of it anywhere.

What nobody knew, including the most advanced experts at the time, is what happens when a meltdown happens, and melted fuel gets dissolved in water and then the radioactive material bonds with porous concrete (the basement walls were not sealed), and how do you clean that shit up?

Short answer, you don't.

Provide evidences of you claims regarding Three Mile Island.

There was a partial fuel melt. It did not melt through as at Fukushima. Chernobyl is a whole different mess.

You don't have to have a complete meltdown to have a serious fucking problem with melted fuel. It dissolves in water, and spread to the turbine room, the cooling systems, and of course flooded the entire basement of the building.

The pipes that carry water in and out of a reactor are quite effective at transferring dissolved fuel all over the place. Just a few pounds of spent fuel is enough to seriously fuck up a reactor building. Nobody actually knows how much is in the walls and foundation of Three Mile island. But it's certainly enough that nobody wants to go into the basement.

Much less start jackhammering the concrete apart.

Why would anyone make up anything about TMI? It was almost as bad as it gets. Contamination of surrounding habitat, loss of a reactor and building, and a huge fucking radioactive mess nobody even knows how to clean up is pretty much exactly what has happened in every single reactor disaster.

And there have been a lot of reactor disasters.

Didn't say anyone made up anything about TMI. But there is lots of bullshit in the press that has been mis-reported.

As for contamination of surrounding habitat, please expound on that as it relates to TMI. I'm not aware of any.

The reactor building has not been lost, but it does appear to have absorbed radioactivity via the cooling water you mentioned earlier.

No one knows how to clean it up? In the case of TMI, one simply has to wait for the radioactivity to decay to a safe level. Chernobyl and Fukushima will, of course, be a bit more problematic due to the increased severity of the events.

TMI has been defueled according to reliable sources and all the pieces, that is unmelted fuel rod parts and all the shit at the bottom of the pressure vessel now rest, somewhat fitfully if you will, in Idaho at the National Lab.

Of course you are not aware of it.

Just like you don't know the upper part of the reactor building was measuring 1 Sv/hr, and you definitely don't know the Sv/hr of the basement area. Not knowing shit is the hallmark pf nuclear disasters.

At TMI, most of the contamination was gas or water, thank the lord, so that the land around the reactor wasn't poisoned. The river and air contamination was brief, and both don't stick around to be measured.

Maybe when they design a reactor it should be contained in a large concrete pit so that if it melts down or whatever, all they have to do is fill the fucker with a concrete and lead mixture.

Problem solved.

Visitors at Chernobyl can now tour the control room, where radiation levels could be 40,000 times higher than normal

https://i.imgur.com/rUEpFg0.jpg
  • Visitors are now permitted to enter the control room of Reactor 4 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
  • Some of the decisions made in that room contributed to the worst nuclear accident the world has ever seen.
  • The control room was previously off-limits to tourists, who are only allowed to view certain spots in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.
  • But Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky recently made Chernobyl an official tourist attraction in an attempt to change the area's negative reputation.

From 2017:
Poland’s WWII museum under political bombardment

In Gdańsk, the battle for country’s future is waged in the past.

GDAŃSK, Poland — So sure was the staff of Poland's new Museum of the Second World War that the country's government would not like it, that it was advertised with the slogan, "See it before they close it.”

They were right to be wary of the government's reaction.

Since the museum opened its doors in March, its director, Paweł Machcewicz, has lost his job and the museum has been combined with another institution. The new director is expected to change the exhibits to make them focus more on Polish suffering in the war.

The original idea for the museum was to break with the tradition of talking about the war through a uniquely national perspective. Machcewicz is now threatening to sue if the government alters the museum. “Interfering in the exhibition is a barbarity and an absolutely political gesture,” he said.

The dispute over the museum isn’t simply an issue for historians and archivists. It roughly reflects the split in the country as a whole between Poland's mostly urban liberals who ran the show until two years ago and the nationalist, Euroskeptics from the Law and Justice party (PiS) who hold the reins today.

As often in Poland, the fight over the past is in reality one over the future direction of the country.
https://www.politico.eu/article/polands ... mbardment/ for the details.

TL/DR: the museum should "show the Polish point of view", i.e. that they "suffered the most" (and forget some nasty things they did – cue Maus).

The big problem with TMI is that the radioactive material is bonded to the concrete. The entire basement/foundation is radioactive.

You don’t want to bust it up to move it because that will release the material into the air land and water

So it’s going to sit there until the radiation goes down

Exactly like every other nuclear disaster site

The bottom line is simple, no meltdown has ever been cleaned up, and they won’t be, even in a hundred generations
