Crystal dagger

Post by Witness »

4,500 year old quartz crystal dagger with ivory hilt. Found in a Copper Age-era tomb in Valencina de la Concepción, Spain.

The hilt is ivory (from Asian or African elephants, both were found at the site).

Similar to obsidian blades, extraordinarily sharp but extremely brittle.

That dagger wasn't meant for use. :)

As for obsidian, which is just natural glass, yes, it's sharp. Glass is used to make knives for microtomes.

I recall reading that a surgeon used a knapped blade for a procedure just to see.
