Fakes II

Post by ed »

So some time ago I came across a small (8" x 5") relief that spoke to me

It was (to my eye) 11c maybe, maybe earlier. At a tag sale in Woodbury, CT. Cheap but not a giveaway. $60 as I recall.
I bought it. Now funny things happen with art. A soldier in a bombed out church in France sees something on the floor that appeals and ... spoils of war. It has happened and will happen again.

I research the shit out of it, even contacted a real honest to god expert in the era who did not disagree with my thinking. Didn't agree but didn't say "no".

I was happy but I knew in my heart of hearts that it was a fake. I just knew.

Then this

Remember the restoration for the pistol? Remember how I said that a buyer would "know" it was a restoration"? Remeber why? Air bubbles, you drug addled moron, air bubbles.

And what was in my treasure? Air bubbles. It was a casting.
:D
