Just got this. Guy was not really sure what it was, upon investigation it is a Model 1 of the model of 1891 single shot target pistol. Funny thing is that one dealer that I know said with great authority "It's a model 3". I mean GREAT authority.
Top of barrel says "Model of 91". Serials match on frame, barrel and latch. However ... the serial is 19xxx. Now according to Neal and Jinks the highest serial for these particular critters is 18873. Hmmm ...
The bore is excellent, the bluing is even but showing a bit of age. Only obvious problem is that the top of each grip panel is chipped off. Very odd, almost like someone wanted to remove the edge.
I'd wanted one of these for my target .22 collection. A dealer I know had this one. We haggled and everyone was happy.
What is interesting about this* is that S&W took an existing gun that they manufactured (.38 single shot model 3) and slapped a barrel that only accepted one cartridge at a time. The frame is exactly what it would be if it was a six shooter.

*n.b. that the word "interesting" is used, often incorrectly, by collectors of anything to pathetically justify yet another expenditure for an object that most of humanity does not give a rat's ass about. This is where you, collectively, let your eys glaze over and dutiffully read on till you can, in good conscience, hit the back button.
