A German (what else?) Garden Gun

Found this thing yesterday. It looks like a shotgun of modest caliber but upon closer examination, it is what is called a "Garden Gun" which is a new one on me.

The left barrel is chambered for a 6mm <spit> Flobert cartridge (~.22), the left for a 9mm rimfire shot cartridge. Another new one on me and something that you can still purchase. Oh joy!

Shot the .22 barrel into the pool but couldn't find the damn projectile. Maybe I'll try again later.

Anyway, the gentle Germans would use these to wipe out jews pests in their gardens. Not really long range... maybe 20 yards? A bit more perhaps?

Utterly useless except as a thing that one can post about on a forum.

ETA I just ran across a small paragraph in a gun catalog that mentioned “birds and rabbits”.

Small small small "game". Garden pests like mice and rats. Snakes maybe. have read that an attraction is that can be shot indoors with impunity (sort of).

That left barrel is 9mm Flobert, not 6.

You know I had that Toma pistol that cyclists would use to keep importuning dogs (and peasants) at bay. Interesting that gunpowder was viewed as a panacea back then.

Hey ed, do you have an over/under of any kind? My buddy had a sweet one years ago, before it was stolen by some rat bastard fucker. It was a .30-06 rifle with a 14 gauge shotgun. We used to hunt gators with it.

The Germans (natch) make weapons called "Drillings" that have all sorts of combos. Neither fish nor fowl, sez I. So I never had much interest. They are pretty though, viz.

The little garden gun in this thread is the only one I own and is a poor step child to the real thing.

Curse my memory, plus I never touched it. The only thing I know for sure is the fucking gun would kill about anything. It was a high powered rifle and also a big fucking shotgun.

I asked him why a shotgun and a rifle? He said the shotgun was in case you missed with the rifle. He used to hunt big gators with it.

I know the rifle part would kill a gator, I watched him do it once.

I can imagine the utility if you were trying to fill a larder and didn’t want to carry multiple rifles. That one you have pictured is beautiful. A hunter would feel comfortable taking a shot at winged game and small to medium game without worrying about losing too much meat or not having enough oomph.
