"Smartest thing I've done lately" thread

Post by Pyrrho »

Did NOT use the chainsaw to cut out stumps of some old, overgrown shrubbery next to the house.

As a result, my several appendages remain properly attached.

:ni:

Tip: the cheap bow saws they sell at Home Depot, Lowes, etc. are crap. I bought a decent pruning saw instead.

Shakin' the bushes here, Boss.

I keep making that mistake, buying the cheap one and it's just not up to the task.

So for me the lesson learned is, don't make the same mistake twice. Make it several times, to make sure.

Yup, smart move alright. Never, ever, use a chainsaw at or below ground level: hit an unseen rock, (they can be inside the stump, which has grown round them), and you're in the shit. Hire a stump grinder for stubborn old stumps that can't be removed with an axe or graft.

In fact, don't use a chain saw at all unless you've had adequate training and have all the protective gear, and even then, be cautious. Damn things used to scare the crap out of me.

You don't need a chainsaw.

Knew a guy once, friend of my grandpa's, who hired a chainsaw and all the protective gear and, magnificently, still managed to disembowel himself with the fucker. The quacks managed to stitch his guts back inside but he was never quite the same...

Just last week my neighbor was up on a stepladder leaned on a tree he was cutting apart using a battery-powered chainsaw, wearing t-shirt, shorts, and sandals. I stayed indoors ready to call the EMTs.

If I absolutely must use power tools, I keep a two-handed death grip on them at all times until they're definitely turned off. Just before lockdown, I met an old friend I used to work for in the building trade occasionally. A qualified brick-mason and carpenter for over forty years, he showed me his left thumb, which he'd cleverly removed with a circular saw the previous year. It kinda works since it's been reattached.

In a similar vein, my best man, Chris, also a builder managed to fall three stories from his own roof, nearly killing himself in the process. "I usually tie myself to the chimney," he said six months later when he was finally released from the hospital. Few men possess such enormous talent, although my father put in a good performance when I was a lad by slicing off all his left toes with a Flymo. :)

How did this thread morph from being the "Smartest thing I've done lately" thread to being the "Dumbest thing someone once did" thread?

I mean, not that I mind. It's been entertaining.

I could add to that entertainment, if that's what this thread is now about. Like for example how I witnessed a guy crash his ultralight airplane, although the damage was only to his wallet.

It's an illustration of why it pays to do smart things, such as giving your money to somebody else to perform potentially life-threatening tasks. :)

Then you would love the airplane story I mentioned above, since the moral of the story was exactly as you describe.

Indeed, having worked on that kind of power equipment I wear gloves and a cup while using hedge trimmers.

That isn't even a question. There are two types of countries when it comes to measurements. The ones that use a consistent, logical system based on universal measures that can easily be used for scientific endeavors, and the one THAT PUT A MAN ON THE GODDAMN MOON.

Chantix bro... we've discussed this before. It fucking works. Seriously. It fucking works. It's hard though if your entire social circle smokes. But it can be done. You have access to the gd internet. Non sugar bubble gum is your friend. Again... It fucking works!

In June 2021, Pfizer halted the production of smoking cessation medication Chantix (varenicline) due to the presence of unacceptable levels of nitrosamines. Nitrosamines are chemicals found in nature and the human body, but consuming high levels of these long-term may raise the risk of cancer.

I started smoking when I was oh 16 or something. I changed over to snooz a form of tobacco even more horrid (for outside observers) commonly known as chewing tobacco when I was about 30. Hey this is Georgia...spits...
Anyway me husband and I decided to quit due to this new drug (yeah buddy) called Chantix.
Long story short I only smoke or dip in nightmares and wake up ...what the fuck?
Again...not to belabor this point it works bud. I wish you the best.

Good luck. I know how hard it can be -- my Dad struggled with it for quite a while. It is why he heartily discouraged me from starting.

Dad told us this story about when he quit smoking. He was at work.

Dad, to co-worker: "I gotta quit smoking. I got a splitting headache and it gets worse every time I take a drag." (takes another drag)

Co-worker: "Why don't you quit then?"

Dad: "I still got half a pack of smokes left!"

Ha. Good one. :bigthumb:

Under the heading of "one size does not fit all", I'll contribute an anecdote:

My father did just the opposite. When he quit, he continued to carry a pack with him so that he would not feel the panic of not having them handy. And then whenever he felt the urge to smoke one, he reminded himself, who's the boss here, me or the cigarette?

I'm guessing that won't work for everyone. My father had one additional incentive to quit. He was recently divorced and his new girlfriend gave him an ultimatum, choose her or the cigarettes. Now I know who the real boss was.

It must have worked, since he hasn't smoked since 1967.

Well, two weeks on and no smokes. I bought a vape and it's really helped. I did ask my doc about Chantix but she said it wasn't suitable for me and, as I'd tried all the other nicotine replacement therapies without success, to try vaping instead. Steady as she goes...

Yesterday, the smartest thing I did was decide to pay off the mortgage: my investments have done so well over the last few years that I can afford to. :)

There isn't any. Brick walls have a cavity for a reason, to prevent water ingress, which is the biggest cause of property damage in the UK. Cavity wall insulation takes about 30 years to pay for itself and can cause thousands of pounds worth of damage if not installed correctly, which it often isn't.

Insulate Britain can kiss my scrawny. hairy arse. I'd punch the fuckers.

See that white thing under the new window, Doc? That is called a radiator, which are quite common in the UK. Repeat after me, R...A...D...I...A...T...O...R. That's it, good lad. Now then, radiators are often found in what we Brits like to call central heating systems.

And, before you start, here is a picture of my electric toothbrush on charge...
