The greenhouse effect

For the record, while the name is not accurate, what it describes is real. The atmosphere slows the loss of heat to space, keeping the earth warmer.

But the same effect keeps the earth cooler, which sounds like a mind fuck. And it sort of is.

Because the atmosphere both absorbs and radiates “heat”, mostly because of water vapor, Ozone and CO2, it slows the ever present cooling which is always happening. If you ever witness a total solar eclipse, you will notice where you are starts cooling, right away. Because obviously the heat source is “gone”.

Same thing happens when a cloud blocks the sun, or the sun goes down (the earth is blocking the sun)

Since it’s mostly water in the atmosphere that blocks and holds the heat, when the atmosphere is dry, it cools way faster than when it’s humid.

This important fact explains something I believe most people do not know. A scientist researching this fact is why we even first knew about the greenhouse effect. He noticed the difference in how hot sunlight felt, and wanted to prove this was a real thing.

He actually invented a fucking thermometer that measured heat from sunlight. Then lugged that shit up and down the Swiss Alps to get the data. (I respect that shit, it’s what I have done before, because I want to fucking know, not just learn from somebody telling me some interesting shit)

Most people on the planet don’t know his name, what the device is called, or what his investigations discovered. If I tell you I will just sound preachy, or worse.

I fired this sort of shit interesting.
