I used to try to lead these guys on by answering their letters. I'd pretend to be everything from a very wealthy investment fund manager (who would offer to invest the money they were trying to get out) to a dirt poor welfare recipient. It didn't seem to matter what I said, the return letters were always the same. They wanted me to provide a fax number where documents could be sent and to know if I had a passport. They would stop after about three excanges and I failed to provide the fax number.

I've researched the Nigerian scam a little bit and found stories of people actually being asked to travel to Nigeria, though it's a little vague on why or what happens when they get there.

I had an interesting one where a guy sent out a mass mailing looking for parts for a time machine. It didn't actually say it was for a time machine, but many of the parts he was looking for had things like "chrono" or "temporal" in the names, and one part was a "flux capacitor" sci-fi fans would recognize from "Back to the Future." Then a week or so later, I recieved another e-mail from the same address advertising to help people who had some event in their past they regretted and would change if they could. I didn't answer that one, but I kept it for a long time.

It seems that skepticalcommunity members are just naturally lucky people - Thanz won a lottery he didn't even remember entering, and I won one too. For a green card! Like Thanz, I also don't recall entering, but, this is definite kosher and above board. I mean, consider the following guaranteed hallmarks of authenticity:

1. The email is in French, followed by a poor translation into English.

2. All I have to do is send:
a) my address
b) a recent passport photo with
c) my name or that of my spouse or child on the back

That can be sent to:

U.S. Department of State
2201 C St. NW
Washington, DC 20520

oh yeah, and

d) $349.67 in "clearance/acceptance fees" - money order only.

3. But strangely, the money order doesn't go to the Department of State. No, I need to send my address to ddvlottery.state.gov@caramail.com and then they'll tell me where to send the cash.

4. I perfectly understand that it is much more efficient for the US government Department of State to use caramail.com, a free web-based mail system based in France than their own email system. That makes a lot of sense to me.

America, here I come! Just need to sort out this money order...

The RCMP and Ontario Provincial Police are collecting this type of scam to try to track down the perpetrators, and track changes in the scam over time.

Forward letters of this type of wafl@phonebusters.com.

I mentioned it in randi.org, but in anticipation of the shift of that forum over to here, I've moved the documentation to http://personal.www.umich.edu/~fields/oy.html:

After a BIG family reunion, I sent generic greetings to one cousin who'd given me his card. He sent back hard-selling recruiting rhetoric for WorldwideDreamBuilders (a division of Alticor, parent corp of Amway), claiming that for 5-10 hours/week I could get an additional $60k-$1M/year, and also claiming that WWDB members have a <2% divorce rate while the nation has >50%. I warned him I'd block him if he kept it up, but he kept it up so I blocked him, so then he continued it from a second e-mail address which I then also blocked. If such listening skills are indicative, I guess maybe WWDB might have a really low divorce rate, because who would marry somebody so unable to listen to others in the first place? But then I've seen stranger things happen...

Certain ISPs seem to be getting payola from spammers; Verizon tops my list of most frequent sources of spam, so I ask anybody who uses Verizon to please switch to another ISP because they won't be able to e-mail me from there. I'm aware that, taken to its natural extreme, my sort of activism could threaten the delicate treaty-like agreements which make The Internet possible, but I contend that spam has already accomplished that threat.

Hotmail is being used by scammers so much that when I signed up an account it actually BLOCKS all of my friend's hotmail accounts by default!

I'm a big fan of the WebPoison family of web-bot foilers. These are CGI scripts which present a web page full of guaranteed bogus randomly developed e-mail addresses, randomized text, and randomly varied links back to the same scripts. A site-spider trying to scan a site for e-mail addresses may take a depth-first or breadth-first search strategy, and either way, will end up with a list of thousands or millions of bogus e-mail addresses. More refined versions of the scripts include a short sleep to allow the host to get some productive computing done.

Here's one I just got. ROFL!

salam alakur

My Name Is AHMED USMAN,I Was The General Manager Of The Presidential

Palace In Basra Untill The U.S And The British Army Invaded The Town

Recently. I Am Not A Military Man But i Was A Civilian Staff Of The Now

Overthrown Government Of Saddam Hussein.

It Is On Record That When The British Soldiers Finally Subdued The

Iraqi Army, I Personally Handed Over The Presidential Mansion To A

Battalion Of The British Army, After Some Valuables In The Mansion

Had Been Plundered And Looted By Some Fleeing Iraqi Soldiers.

During This Period, I Was Able To Recover Some Valuables Which I Kept

Out Of The Reach Of Both The Fleeing Iraqi Soldiers And The In-Coming

British And Their American Allies. These Valuables Included $18.6

Million USD (Eighteen Million, Six Hundred Thousand United States

Dollars),

Some Gold And Other Precious Stones.

When It Became Obvious That I Was Going To Loose Everything Because

Of The Raging War And The Need For Me To Run For Cover, I

secretly

siphoned the sum of $18.6 Million USD (Eighteen Million, Six Hundred

Thousand United States Dollars) And Other Valuables out of Iraqi and

deposited the money with a security firm that transports valuable

goods and consignments

through diplomatic means.

I am contacting you because I want you to go to the security company

and claim the money on my behalf since I have declared that the

consignment belong to my foreign business partner. You shall also be

required to assist me in investment in your country

and Help Me Get Out Of Iraq And As Well Secure A Permanent Residence

Permit For Me In A Safe Country, Where I Can Live The Rest Of My

Life.

I Want To Get Out Of Iraq Fast. My Passport And Driver's Licence Have

Been Lost To The War. I Have No Telephone To Call Because All

Telephone Services Have Been Cut. No Water, No Electricity Here. To

Send This Mail, I Had To Go To A Hotel Where Foreigners Are Staying.

I Also Managed To Survive Everyday Because Of The Kindness Of The

British Soldiers Who Now Occupy The Presidential Mansion.

If I Am Able To Get This Help Urgently, I Will Like To Leave Iraq

Quickly And For Your Services, I will be very much obliged to give

you 30% and 5% for the expenses that you may incurred towards this

transaction.

When I receive your positive response I will let you now where the

security company is and the payment pin code to claim the money which

is very important.

Please Contact Me Through my private email address

at:ahmedusman69@yahoo.com

if You Are Willing To Help Me.

My Regards,

Ahmed Usman

A tug on the old heartstrings

Post by JamesM »

Dear Sir,

As you read this, I don't want you to feel sorry for
me, because, I believe everyone will die someday.
My name is Salama Hassan a merchant in Dubai, in
the U.A.E.I have been diagnosed with Esophageal cancer .
It has defiled all forms of medical treatment, and
right now I have only about a few months to live,
according to medical experts.
I have not particularly lived my life so well, as I
never really cared for anyone(not even myself)but my
business. Though I am very rich, I was never generous,
I was always hostile to people and only focused on my
business as that was the only thing I cared for. But
now I regret all this as I now know that there is more
to life than just wanting to have
or make all the money in the world.
I believe when God gives me a second chance to come to
this world I would live my life a different way from
how I have lived it. Now that God has called me, I
have willed and given most of my property and assets
to my immediate and extended family members as well as
a few close friends.
I want God to be merciful to me and accept my soul so,
I have decided to give also to charity
organizations, as I want this to be one of the last
good deeds I do on earth. So far, I have distributed
money to some charity organizations in the U.A.E,
Algeria and Malaysia. Now that my health has
deteriorated so badly, I cannot do this myself
anymore.
I once asked members of my family to close
one of my accounts and distribute the money which I
have there to charity organization in Bulgaria and
Pakistan, they refused and kept the money to
themselves. Hence, I do not trust them anymore, as
they seem not to be contended with what I have left
for them.
The last of my money which no one knows of is the huge
cash deposit of Twelve million dollars
$12,000,000,00 that I have with a finance/Security
Company abroad. I will want you to help me collect
this deposit and dispatched it to charity
organizations.

I have set aside 15% for you and for your time. Please
if you wish to assist me contact me via this email
address
salamahassan@gawab.com

Allah be with you.
Salama Hassan.

My heart bleeds, Salama.
