Favourite Tom Lehrer song

Post by iain »

Difficult - there are so many good ones, but without just listing the whole of Tom Lehrer in Concert, I think I would have to go for "I hold your hand in mine" (the song he claims he got the most requests not to sing again, if I remember correctly).

Is anyone else old enough to remember "The Electric Company"? Kind of a hipper version of "Sesame Street" for slightly older children. Anyway, Tom Lehrer wrote a song for The Electic Co. called "Silent E"--

He turned a dam - Alikazam! - into a dame
But my friend Sam stayed just the same

Who can turn a man into a mane?
Who can turn a van into a vane?
A little hug becomes huge instantly
Don't add W, don't add X, and don't add Y or Z,
Just add Silent E

I also like "The Elements"--great for chemistry class.

Having just listened to it I add Oedipus Rex to my list. And maybe We Will All Go Together When We Go.

Damnit, all of them are good! I like The Elements too... you've got me listening to "An Evening Wasted with Tom Lehrer" now...

Was this Lehrer... ?

For paradise the southland is my nominee
Give me a hamhock and a grit of hominy

I like my buddy's morph...

Jamaica is a land I want to tarry in
Give me a reefer and a rastafarian

"Pollution", "Folk Song Army", but I think my favorite has to be "Who's Next?"

I remember the Electric Company. Cosby as a 3 musketeers character screwing up the all for one line: "All for me, nothing for anyone else!" or something.

Lee Chamberlain was on that show, if I remember. Wilt Chamberlain's brother. Then he turned into Morgan Freeman. :D

The Elements, Poisoning Pigeons in the Park, My Home Town, The Masochism Tango, We Will All Go Together When We Go.......

You know, it'd be quicker to list the ones I didn't like.

Errr, just give me a minute here.

Ummmm.......
